Writing awards, ‘Poetry Slam’ competition.

Dec. 9 is the deadline to compete for the writing awards for Daytona State students taking any ENC, LIT, AML, or HUM class. The annual awards will be announced at the April Honors Convocation for winning essays in five areas: narrative writing, general research, literary research, poetry and argumentation.

Students must complete an application, sign and date it, then give it to their professor for submission. Each essay should have earned a minimum grade of B and meet syllabus requirements for the assignment. Entries should be sent on paper by the professor to English Department Awards in care of Richard Kraskin on the Deltona campus. Professors have the option of submitting any essays deemed appropriate. Please designate the category for each entry. Winning entries may be published as models on the department website or included in the 2012 edition of Aeolus, the College’s literary magazine.

Entries will be judged in the spring by a committee of faculty members. For information, contact any member of the committee: Jill Clark, Richard Kraskin, Kathleen Lazarus, Joanne Pinkston-McDuffe, Gregg Stone, Lynn Hawkins or chair Richard Vollaro.

Also on Dec. 9, the college community is invited to join Aeolus staff for the “coming out” party of the 2011 edition of the literary magazine. Professors will act as judges, while students vie for best spoken word performance. Prizes will be awarded to the top entrants. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. in the Faculty Dining Room, Bld. 130, adjacent to the food court. Admission is free and entertainment and food will be provided.

Aeolus is now accepting submissions of photography, artwork, poetry, and short fiction and nonfiction pieces for possible publication in the magazine. Visit them on Facebook or e-mail editors at Aeolus@Daytonastate.edu
