Students enrolled in the Daytona State College Spanish and English as a Second Language courses meet to exchange information about language and culture. Arranged by language faculty, the most recent exchange at the DeLand Campus complements and enriches the more traditional classroom knowledge and activities by allowing students to share personal experiences with each other face-to-face. Dr. Jaime Calderon hosted the event on Oct. 10.

While faculty suggest topics that include education, family, religion and holidays, students may discuss any and all topics that interest them. The goal of the exchange is to promote mutual understanding and respect with the hope that peace may result. DSC students have participated in exchanges like this one for many years.

Dr. Raymond Cornelius is the chair of the Modern Languages and Speech Communication Department. For information on this and other projects and programs, contact the department at 506-4327.

Teaching Beyond Borders seeks students to visit Haiti

Daytona State College students have the opportunity to travel to Haiti May 29 to June 5 to collaborate with teachers and work to enhance teaching and learning. The Teaching Beyond Borders: Service-Learning in Haiti Study Abroad Program will be offered Summer A 2014.

While there, students will gain an appreciation and an increased awareness and understanding of the diversity of another culture, learn strategies for teaching English language learners and develop a project to promote literacy in the local community. Students participating in this annual service-learning project will conduct a needs assessment that will be used by participants the following year. This project will create lasting cross-cultural connections and opportunities for both students in Haiti and the United States, sponsors say.
