On Sept. 11, a memorial service was held at Daytona State College to commemorate the eleventh year anniversary of the collapse of the Twin Towers.
Treasurer Alejandro Peres of the Student Government Association led the Pledge of Allegiance while other students like SGA officer Gerrard Minnus and vocal student Coral Pitter sang the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corp of Mainland High School marched to honor all of the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11.
In regards of the memorial service Major Miglioranzi, head of the JROTC said, “We had a survey over at my school and they got a lot out of it. About 30 percent of them didn’t know that it was three planes that crashed. It was a great turn out.”
The memorial service granted its audience with the history of the tragic day, since some students were not old enough to recall what happened 11 years ago.
“It was so long ago. One student said that she was watching Barney and as she went into her parent’s room it was on TV,” said Miglioranzi.
For the audience, young and old alike, the memorial service allowed them to give 9/11 the thought and recognition it deserved.
“I think young kids growing up today forget about the past. I believe it’s really good for the students to take time to remember,” said SGA president Alicia Dove.
The service concluded with a moment of silence allowing everyone’s thoughts to honor a moment in history that will never be forgotten.
