On Oct. 18, the Florida College System Publication Associations held its 54th Annual Award Conference in Tampa. Several In Motion staff members and faculty advisers Elena Jarvis and Bruce Cook were in attendance to celebrate another award-winning year of publication.

Daytona State College’s student-run newspaper, In Motion, received awards in 14 categories. The Inner Circle award, given to students winning awards in three or more newspaper categories, was presented to DSC alumni and previous Editor-In-Chief Emelia Hitchner and current Designer Editor Brianna Mims.

In addition, Hitchner also was awarded a plaque and certificate for first place in Humor Writing and received a certificate for her Editorial Cartoon, which tied for second place, as well as a third place in In-Depth Reporting. Mims took home first-place plaques and certificates for Design, with Jessica Keith, and Picture Story, with Orion Christy and Lisa Silversmith. Mims also received a second-place certificate for Comic Strip.

Other first-place winners were: Jessica Keith, Ad Design; Brittany Fournier, Feature Photo; Shaun Haugh, Sports Photo; and James Smithwick, General Column.

Second-place certificate winners were: Lance Rothwell, News Photo; Tom Lynn, Feature Story; Steven Katona, Feature Story; Kali Colden, Sports Writing; Vincent Davis, Sports Column; and Mirgena Demneri, Arts Review (tie).

Aeolus, the annual magazine published by DSC students, was honored with second-place for General Excellence which is based on the results in all categories.

Jessica Keith was the sole student from DSC winning the Inner Circle Award for the magazine. Keith had a first-place in Photography with “Concrete Jungle” along with John Picione for “Moulin Rouge” and Lance Rothwell for “Black Beauty.” Keith’s second-place, Two-Page Spread with Lawrence Grimm, can be seen on pages 70 and 71. Keith also took second-place for the Staff Page.

Matt Beach had a first-place Photo winner for his “The Mind’s Continuum.” In a tie for third-place were Bruno Leite in the category Poem, for “Excitement, Intelligence, and Denial”; and Elisabeth Gillham, Art, for “Back of Seated Nude.”

Seminars, given by a wide assortment of knowledgeable professionals covered topics such as ethics and accuracy, social media’s role, photography and videography for journalists, and strategies for interviewing people. Tours of WFLA Channel 8, the Tampa Tribune and the Tampa Bay Times Forum were offered, giving students an idea of possible work situations for the future.

On the lighter side of things, a drawing was held, allowing a large group from the conference to attend a Tampa Bay Lightning ice hockey game against Minnesota. The final score was 3-1 in favor of the Tampa team.

Others had the opportunity to trolley over to Ybor city for a ghost tour. The guide encouraged the group to take many photographs with the hopes of capturing a specter in the picture. While walking through the historic city, the guide gave a detailed story about the original settlers of the area, many who died under less than ideal circumstances, enriching the tales of those caught between worlds.

The three-day conference was full of experiences to pique the journalist and photographer in each person who attended.
