DSC provides a convergence of health, fitness, and nutrition to those willing to make time for themselves physically and mentally.

Daytona State College has health and lifestyle programs that range from dance to yoga to quit smoking sessions, and everything else that fits in between. Little do some students know, there is a whole new world hidden in the L. Gale Lemerand Fitness Center.

The L. Gale Lemerand Fitness Center was opened in Oct. 1997, with 5,500 square footage for activity. Currently, there are 3.2 tons worth of free weights for those lifters out there. There is a 9-piece Cybex resistance training course that boasts “science-based” fitness for those looking for quick exercise results. These machines were created to maximize the muscle load while keeping joint stress at low levels. There is also a 31-piece aerobic arena for those students and members that wish to have an upbeat workout.

“We get around 80-120 visitors in here per day,” says John Tosi, Fitness Center Specialist.

These fitness center visitors include college athletes, students and faculty members. The fitness center is open Monday and Wednesday, 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m..

With the exercise technology that DSC possesses, it would seem an easy task to keep the student body healthy. It may not, however, just be a work out facility that the students need.

Knowledge is a powerful thing, says Katie Knappenberger, DSC Assistant Athletic Trainer and teacher. “Everybody thinks they know something about nutrition.”

Knappenberger reaches out to her athletes and students by dispelling myths and encouraging students to share their knowledge with others. With social media’s increasing popularity, she believes it is a great way to expose students to knowledge. She runs the college health Twitter account called DSC Falcon Nutrition, where she allows her nutrition students to write tweets based on the things they learn in class. Knappenberger posts these tweets to @DSCFalconFuel.

As far as nutrition on campus goes, Knappenberger thinks that more work needs to be done on the cafeteria.

“Change is hard. But if you want people to eat good food, you have to give them good food to eat,” she says.

Adding healthier options to the cafeteria menu and providing nutritional facts on the foods served there could be the small change that DSC needs regarding student health, according to the trainer. And, in all fairness, the cafeteria has made inroads into healthy eating by expanding its offerings to include not just the salad bar, but also wraps and other alternatives.

DSC has recently passed a smoking ban on campus, with implementation set to beginning in August. The policy explains that tobacco and second-hand smoke must be removed from campus in order to provide a “safe, healthy and productive learning environment for students, employees and visitors.” Although electronic cigarettes
are still allowed, they are forbidden in classrooms.

Quit Smoking Now sessions are also available for those wishing to make a healthy change. Tosi notes that DSC receives funds from past Florida tobacco lawsuits through Area Health Education Centers ─ a statewide system for health professional education and support founded upon 10 regional centers ─ to create programs to help college students quit smoking. There are 6-week classes and concentrated 2-hour classes. As far as the format success rates of these classes, Tosi says, “A group setting is the best way to get through to people.”

Operating improvements are being implemented at the Aquatics Center as well, where students, staff and faculty will soon be able to access a website that will offer information on availability of lanes for lap-swimming and other activities offered there. The state-of-the-art swimming pool is an often overlooked aspect of the Fitness Center, although swimming programs at other area high schools and colleges benefit from its use.

More information on programs and topics discussed can be found under the Fitness Center tab on the Daytona State College Student Life page at http://www.daytonastate.edu/student_life.html.

By Martha-Jayne Keglor Special to In Motion Daytona State College offers a variety of classes and extracurricular activities, but many do not realize that there are beneficial services provided in areas other than academics and clubs.
