Eaton addresses the students of Daytona State.

Welcome to the start of another academic year. Fall is an exciting time at Daytona State College as we open our doors to thousands of new and continuing students whose academic needs, preparation, interests and goals are as varied as the four seasons.

The best part is we are able this year to continue Daytona State’s tradition of excellence and student success without the need to increase tuition. I’m proud to be a part of an institution that places a priority on making college accessible and affordable for everyone, and I hope you are, too.

This fall marks the reaffirmation of our accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, also known as SACSCOC. In September, a visiting team will be on campus to meet with college constituent groups. Most within the college community will not even notice they are here. However, don’t be surprised if a SACSCOC representative randomly asks you to share your thoughts on your Daytona State College experience. Everyone’s perspective matters.

As part of our reaffirmation, Daytona State has developed a Quality Enhancement Plan called Learn to SOAR — Students Optimizing Academic Resources. The plan consists of a one-credit hour, seven-week course to be taken at the same time students enroll in ENC 1101: College Composition. It is designed particularly for first-time-incollege students who may be having difficulty in this all-important writing course. SOAR will teach students how to better their chances of success in ENC 1101 and beyond by mastering the free resources available in the Academic Support Center, the Library and College Writing Center. A pilot program will begin in Spring 2014, but speak with your academic adviser now to learn more.

Also new this year is Daytona State’s move to become a tobacco-free institution, which follows a national trend in higher education as colleges and universities work to ensure safe, healthy and productive learning environments. Tobacco use of any kind is now prohibited on all college property, except inside one’s personal vehicle. We ask that everyone respect this new policy, and we encourage all tobacco users to visit our health and fitness center to learn about a variety of free cessation programs that are available.

You will be a part of many teachable moments during your time at Daytona State, both inside and outside the classroom. Learning depends largely on how we make connections, not only with facts and concepts, but also the
human kind. It is the hallmark of what we like to call the “Daytona State of Mind.” You will see it when you find professors who are genuinely interested in your academic success, speak with counselors and academic advisors who understand the challenges you may face and can help smooth your path toward a college degree, or in the
friendships you will make by participating in the many student activities, cultural programs and Falcon sports lineups Daytona State offers.

I hope you find rewards in the relationships you develop here. Get involved. Be a part. College is a place to learn and grow. Now is your time. Spread your Falcon wings and soar!

Carol W. Eaton, Ph.D..
