It was a warm and friendly atmosphere among faculty, Board of Trustee members, executive directors, deans and even DSC College President Dr. Carol Eaton during a Daytona State College Foundation breakfast at the Conference Center March 27.

Established in1974, the Foundation’s main focus is to help support students financially, so that they may be able to excel in school without the worry of where the rest of the money for their tuition is coming from. The Foundation also helps necessary projects the college is not able to afford. The majority of support for the Foundation comes from private donors. The rest comes from the community, as well as employees of the college, including administration, faculty and staff members. Eighty percent of the Foundation’s money goes to tuition scholarships for DSC students.

At the 8 a.m. breakfast, board member Dorinda Maddy revealed some of the ideas of the Foundation and one that stood out is called the Credit-Hour Club, a novel program suggested by Dr. Eaton.

Dr. Easton said for every three-credit hour class, it currently costs about $100 dollars per hour or almost $300 for just one course. And the price seems to go up every year.

“If one person donated $100, then the next donated the same or more, it begins a trickle effect, because soon there will be $300 dollars for a class for a student to receive,” she said.

Elaborating more on that powerful idea, she added, “Every gift, whether big or small, makes a difference.”

That was the purpose and focus of the breakfast, attended by more than 50 community and College members. They were treated to fruit, pastries, yogurt, coffee and juice, as well as a sales pitch from the Foundation, which is calling upon College employees to boost their participation in providing tuitions to students.

Preceding the closing of the breakfast, the Director of Campus Services at the New Smyrna/Edgewater campus talked about what the Foundation means to him. Clarence McCloud said, “I sure believe it benefits our students! As students look to the future you want to make sure they’re prepared for their future.”

Also recounted were the many ways people in the community step up to the plate for young and old students. A male patient at a local hospital, for example, appreciated the care he received from his nurturing nurses, so he changed to benefit the Foundation and the College’s nursing school to show his gratitude. The nurses who cared for him were graduates of DSC’s program and had also previously received scholarships from the Foundation when they were in school, according to Foundation Executive Director Kay Burniston.

For information on how to apply for a DSC Foundation scholarship, go to www.daytonastate.edu and search for the key words “Foundation Scholarship.”
