Planning is key especially when flying overseas. To see that you book the best flights, make sure flight times and destinations are researched ahead of time.

“The biggest mistake people make when trying to travel is choosing the wrong flight too late,” says Kelly Monroe, a travel agent for AAA of St. Augustine. “You want to be sure to look at possible flights at least three to four months ahead of time to be sure that you get the right flight and the best times”

Proper planning is a great way to save money as well. This helps each traveler set up a budget ahead of time, so no extra dollars are spent. Travel agents are also a great help when planning a trip. They know when and where to buy the best plane tickets, along with premium visitor destinations. Most of all it’s best to do as much reading and research of the destination as possible.

Traveling light is another great way to strengthen the overall experience of the trip. Depending on the destination, many items commonly taken are not need. Only one piece of luggage should be taken and a travel backpack is suggested. This will limit the amount of frustration that usually accompanies a piece of rolling luggage. In the backpack should be the following: one weeks worth of clothes and undergarments, be sure not to take jeans because they are heavy and take too long to dry; two pairs of shoes, a casual and a dress shoe; and a minimal amount of toiletries, since many of the things that will be needed can be purchased at the destination. Be sure to leave room for any souvenirs that will be purchased.

College student Hunter Daly, who is an avid traveler, says, “Traveling light really makes the trip so much better. You feel more like a traveler and less like a tourist. You really get to experience the area and get to know the town. The less I have to carry with me the better. I know that I can always buy a shirt or shampoo if I need it. There’s no sense packing a bunch of things I don’t need.”

More important than packing the right thing or booking the right flight is to always travel as safely as possible. Never travel to a foreign place alone. Be aware of scams that are popular to the area.

A money belt is always a great idea. It’s a small belt, much like a fanny pack, that straps to the inside of a shirt and holds money, credit/debit cards and passports. Know the language and know the area, do research to find the best part of town to find a hotel.

Monroe says, “I advise all my clients to read as much as they can before they travel. This will guarantee that they stay safe and make the most of their trip.”

EF Education First is one of the prominent companies that offers experiences abroad for student travelers.
