{"id":668,"date":"2013-03-22T11:29:45","date_gmt":"2013-03-22T16:29:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/?p=668"},"modified":"2018-05-13T18:48:02","modified_gmt":"2018-05-13T22:48:02","slug":"stem-expo-wows-crowds-with-science","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/oldsite\/stem-expo-wows-crowds-with-science\/","title":{"rendered":"STEM expo wows crowds with science"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">By James Smithwick<\/span><\/p>\n<p>On February 8<sup>th<\/sup>, the News-Journal Center played host to Daytona State College\u2019s STEM expo, featuring scholarly seminars and displays, rocket and space experts and even a group of Science Cheerleaders.<\/p>\n<p>DSC\u2019s STEM Community Scholars Program aims to increase the number of students receiving degrees in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines.\u00a0 The program is supported by a substantial five-year grant from the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The exposition showcased presentations from rocket scientist Kantis Simmons, a leading academic success strategist, engineer, product developer and author, and Dionne Jackson, a specialist from NASA\u2019s Materials Science Laboratory at Kennedy Space Center.<\/p>\n<p>Attendees also saw examples of Combustible Chemistry, presented by Dr. John Picione, and the popular How Mr. Kitty Looks on the Inside, with Dr. Walter Saviuk, both from DSC\u2019s School of Biological and Physical Sciences. In addition, spectators were given access to demonstrations by local, state and national companies representing such fields as health care, aerospace, robotics, manufacturing, engineering and higher education.<\/p>\n<p>Students from several area schools attended and saw first-hand how the STEM community and its related fields will impact the future, as well as a rarity in the science and technology fields \u2013 Cheerleaders.<\/p>\n<p>The Science Cheerleaders, a group of current and former NFL and NBA cheerleaders who also are working or pursuing careers in STEM fields, showed spectators that science isn\u2019t all bowties and Bunsen burners.
