Just as no two snowflakes are the same, no two student-athletes\u00a0are\u00a0the same. Young men and young women from different backgrounds, religions, financial statuses and families come together with one thing in common \u2014 the\u00a0opportunity to play college athletics
\nDaytona State has student athletes from many countries, including England, France, Korea, Australia and Haiti. Although most of their time is spent being a\u00a0full-time\u00a0student and attending practice, team meetings and games, most student athletes still find time to do the things that they enjoy outside of their many responsibilities.<\/p>\n
Zach Henderson, a freshman on the DSC baseball team says, \u201cWhen I am not at school or the field house, you can usually find me at the Oaks. I spend a lot of time studying, watching shows and playing catch with my roommates.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Oaks\u201d is what many DSC student\u00a0athletes\u00a0have nicknamed their apartment complex,\u00a0more formally known\u00a0as Whisper Oaks, where\u00a0many\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0athletes live off campus.<\/p>\n
On a sunny Saturday afternoon at Whisper Oaks, Henderson and a few of his teammates were setting up camp in a patch of trees in the middle of the apartment complex\u2019s common area. Henderson was setting up Enos. He explained that\u00a0Enos\u00a0are a type of hammock that you can tie around trees or poles that hold up to 400 pounds. Seven of Henderson\u2019s teammates and friends at the Oaks have\u00a0Enos and it is quite a sight to see.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love when we hang out in the trees,\u201d Henderson continued. \u201cI enjoy being in nature and just relaxing with my team.\u201d<\/p>\n
After conducting several other interviews, it is clear the \u201cThe\u00a0Oaks\u201d is the place to be. While interviews were being conducted, several volleyball players were passing a ball on the street and the basketball team was outside talking, pumping music through their car\u00a0speakers.\u00a0Cloee-Anna Smith, a sophomore on the Daytona State softball team said, \u201cThe Oaks is a pretty awesome place to live. We\u2019re all looking out for each other and there\u2019s a lot of time to hang out.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is not only the student\u00a0athletes\u00a0interested in their\u00a0extracurricular\u00a0activities, the coaches are involved as well. Laura Brown, Head\u00a0Women\u2019s Golf Coach at Daytona State College, explains how she expects a lot from her\u00a0players\u00a0but\u00a0wants\u00a0to make sure that they have time to enjoy themselves outside of training and studying. Brown\u00a0said, \u201cIn\u00a0their spare time my athletes like to spend time doing some activities other than golf, such as going to the\u00a0beach, watching movies and spending time with family\u00a0and\u00a0friends. In the\u00a0off season,\u00a0they like a little more freedom to be able to relax as well, instead of going through the daily grind of in season activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jessica Bailey, a freshman on the women\u2019s golf team, said it is a little more difficult to find things to do without a car.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am from England and I was not able to get a car here in Florida. I can\u2019t drive, but most of my teammates can and they are pretty good about giving me rides when I need them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bailey explained how she has found new hobbies that don\u2019t require leaving home. \u201cI spend a lot of time watching movies and baking cakes and other sweets, which my housemates really\u00a0like. Sometimes I also like to sleep, as bad as that sounds,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n
Also found at The Oaks were Jack Nagy and Justin Rodriguez, two sophomores on the DSCbaseball team. They said when their team was in the off-season, their coach created a foosball tournament among\u00a0the\u00a0players. Nagy and Rodriguez were getting ready for their head-to-head battle that afternoon and it was clear that competitiveness was in the air between the two good friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really all about the angles,\u201d Nagy said. \u201cJR is a really good\u00a0goalie,\u00a0but\u00a0offense\u00a0is\u00a0usually my strong point. Let\u2019s just say I\u2019ll be happy if I win.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
