{"id":550,"date":"2012-03-15T15:35:15","date_gmt":"2012-03-15T20:35:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/?p=550"},"modified":"2018-05-13T18:44:20","modified_gmt":"2018-05-13T22:44:20","slug":"music-club-hits-high-note-with-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/oldsite\/music-club-hits-high-note-with-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Music club hits high note with students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0Cherise Moulden<\/p>\n<p>Formed during the summer of 2011, the\u00a0Music Industry Club began to place ideas\u00a0and thoughts together to create a club\u00a0where students from the Daytona State\u00a0Music Program and non-Music Program\u00a0students could come together and learn\u00a0about the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Every Tuesday at the News JournalCenter, the MIC members eagerly wait<br \/>\nfor the meeting to begin at 5:30pm. With\u00a0boxes of pizza and sodas laid out for<br \/>\nthe members, they grab their snacks,\u00a0have a seat at the tables and listen to the<br \/>\nPresident of the club, Jackie Randall and\u00a0Vice President, Max Cleland discuss future<br \/>\nevents. They discuss who will do what,\u00a0where the events will be held and who will<br \/>\npromote the events.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do members learn about the\u00a0industry but they also get involved with\u00a0open MIC nights where the members\u00a0can sign up to showcase their hard work.\u00a0They also hold performance where\u00a0they have three sets of performances\u00a0and three different bands performing.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most important activities\u00a0the club gets involved with is running\u00a0concession stands at various venues like\u00a0the Daytona Blues Festival. While running\u00a0these stands, the members get a chance to\u00a0play their own music in hopes of receiving\u00a0monetary donations to help raise money\u00a0for the club. All of the donations they\u00a0acquire will help them get to their biggest\u00a0goal which is being able to perform at the\u00a0Daytona Flea Market.<\/p>\n<p>With a total of 17 members, ranging\u00a0from ages 17 to 50, they are willing to do\u00a0whatever they can to make the club well\u00a0known at DSC, as well as outside of the\u00a0College.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the music program, what the\u00a0members learn is vital to what they will\u00a0come up against in the future when working\u00a0in the music industry. They are learning all<br \/>\nof the details on how to promote shows,\u00a0coordinate shows and put themselves<br \/>\nout there to become better musicians and\u00a0industry workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want our members to walk away\u00a0with real hands on experience, because<br \/>\nyou can only learn so much when in the\u00a0classroom,\u201d says Vice President, Cleland.\u00a0\u201cWe want them to be able to take what\u00a0they\u2019ve learned here and use it in real\u00a0world situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Club member, Jessie Sweeny says, \u201cI\u00a0heard women are minorities in the industry,\u00a0so I took that as a challenge and decided I\u00a0wanted to be a part of it.\u201d She wants to\u00a0be able to do it all, including designing her\u00a0own studio where she can write and record\u00a0her own music.<\/p>\n<p>As both a member of the club and music\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">program, Brandon Avila says, \u201cBeing in\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">this club has opened my eyes to how hard it\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">may be to get your music out to the public\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">and what measures you must take to get\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">people to hear it\u201d. He says the club is fun\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">and the members get to focus on what they\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">love.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Luka Cutrone hopes that when he leaves\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">the club he will have gained an appreciation\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">for different artists and genres of music. He\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">also desires to grow in his experiences with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">the club.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Anyone interested in becoming a part\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">of the club \u2013 which is based at the News\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Journal Center 221 N.
