Counseling Services recognizes these difficulties and provides many free services during such moments of life.<\/p>\n<p>Students or teachers who might refer a student may schedule an appointment by calling 386-506-3038 or visiting the office. Each student receives up to three counseling sessions per issue. If the student is in need of long term counseling, treatment or therapeutic intervention, they are referred to a local area mental health professional. Sessions are confidential, unless the student poses a danger or threat to themselves or others.<\/p>\n<p>Services are not only for problems that students face within school, but also for those outside of school.<\/p>\n<p>Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Director of Counseling Miguel Rivera says, \u201cWe help students deal with situations outside of school so that those issues won\u2019t interfere with their academic progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students may come to the office to address all types of concerns, such as death, relationship problems, self-esteem issues or even Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Most students visit the center, located in Annex Building 100, room 108, for anxiety related issues, especially around the end of the semester and final exams.. In this seminar students learn how to recognize signs of stress and methods to reduce them through relaxation and exercise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe teach you how to manage your life and the negative aspects of life,\u201d says Rivera.<br \/>\nAlso offered is the Project Speak service, a suicide prevention group. The coordinator of the programs travels to Daytona State College campuses giving workshops to faculty, students and staff to identify signs of suicide. Students may recognize these signs within themselves and follow up. The workshop has educated more than 5,000 faculty and staff during the past two years.<\/p>\n<p>Project Speak hosts the Mindfest, The event is a mental health festival that gathers local agencies like Academic Support Services, the College Writing Center, Campus Crusade for Christ and college clubs to help students identify supportive resources that are there for them to prevent them from crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Project Speak Coordinator Tony Deobil says, \u201cThe more connected to others students are to other people, the less likely suicidal thoughts will develop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. Mindfest seeks to inform and people who may be at risk. This Spring, it will be an indoor-outdoor event ranging from the campus Tower Clock to the President\u2019s Conference Room in Building 110, which will be a \u201cstress-free zone\u201d through where students will be screened for depression, Deobil says.<\/p>\n<p>All of the support at Counseling Services have one common goal which is to \u201chelp people to find their strength, learn new skills to cope and make the best of the college experience,\u201d says Carole Eagle Luby, a counselor at the center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Shawayna Teal Dealing with the stresses of life and a full course load at school can be difficult.
