{"id":4937,"date":"2018-03-07T20:22:54","date_gmt":"2018-03-08T00:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/?p=4937"},"modified":"2018-05-13T18:38:28","modified_gmt":"2018-05-13T22:38:28","slug":"exhibit-a-deja-vu-civil-rights-moment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/oldsite\/exhibit-a-deja-vu-civil-rights-moment\/","title":{"rendered":"Exhibit a d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu Civil Rights moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Asia Howell<br \/>\nSpecial to In Motion<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s just say at the #1960NOW exhibit at Daytona State College is a cultural change that people normally would not see at a state institution.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The #1960NOW showcase in the Southeast Museum of Photography\u2019s upstairs gallery demonstrates powerful visual representations of African-Americans. Creator Sheila Pree Bright explains that she is on a journey to change<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>perceptions and how African Americans are viewed. In light of the many recent racial injustices and incidents of police brutality, this exhibit executes the initial message that such injustices will not go unnoticed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Photos on display bring to life the hardships African-Americans face on a daily basis. Bright\u2019s work actually challenges viewers to think and question themselves on the deeper meaning of the portraits.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Her images represent the serious racial issues that have been broadcasted through cities such as Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Atlanta and Ferguson, Mo. All of these cities represent modern racial discrimination that had been taking place for a long time. Her photos display unknowns, as well as known names such as Mike Brown and Alexia Christian, both killed by police under suspicious circumstances.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>These and other photos show the pain, suffering and struggles people go through just to get their point across \u2014 \u201cBlack Lives Matter.\u201d But they also show that people of color won\u2019t back down from the issues and want to be heard, no matter the circumstances.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>The SMP exhibition is an artistic recommendation for all races to view and to get a different outlook on these issues.
