\n<\/span>\u201cA Night at the Tony\u2019s:\u00a0 <\/span>The Best of Broadway\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>wowed the capacity crowd, which was clapping and cheering throughout the show during its run at the Gilepsy Theatre in the News-Journal Center,.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Presented by Daytona State College\u2019s Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment, & Art, the production was directed by theater arts professor Samantha Stern, with vocal accompaniment provided by the school\u2019s new choral director Jean Hickman and Stern\u2019s student \u201clife support,\u201d Kayla Mangold???\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Bathed in purples and reds, the stage also lit up with 90 minutes of upbeat music from Broadway classics \u201cChicago,\u201d \u201cDream Girls,\u201d \u201cPippin\u201d and \u201cLes Miserables.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>Hosts Gamaliel Arroyo and Moesha Searight introduced each musical number while charming the crowd with jokes and random selections of the audience to answer surprise questions. All the activity kept the audience on its toes.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>From \u201cChicago,\u201d the packed theater enjoyed show tunes such as the emotionally tense \u201cAll that Jazz.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>The provocatively-dressed dancers were dynamically in sync as they presented the song simultaneously with confidence and erotica.\u00a0 <\/span>Later, the Chicago dancers returned to entertain the crowd with \u201cCell Block Tango,\u201d strutting dance moves that held the audience captive.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>During the \u201cPippin\u201d segment singers\/dancers dressed up as if they were a part of a magic show, with the lead wearing a shiny red bow-tie and vest during a performance of\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cMagic to Do.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>During the portion where Pippin\u2019s grandmother tries to give him advice, the audience was encouraged join in and sing \u201cNo Time at All.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>\u201cLes Miserables,\u201d chockfull of expressive performers and emotional drama, is set in the slums of Paris and included a lot of representative drinking and hanky-panky.\u00a0 <\/span>Songs such as \u201cMaster of The House\u201d and \u201cOne Day More\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>riveted the audience, while \u201cI Dreamed a Dream,\u201d sung by Imani Severin, offered a moment of\u00a0 <\/span>heartbreak and grief that stirred up unbridled emotions.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Up next, was \u201cDreamgirls,\u201d which opened with theatrical spotlights and klieg lights throughout the theater that were a reminder of the disco era.\u00a0 <\/span>Three \u201cDreamgirls,\u201d dressed to the \u201cT\u201d in glittery, tight, red gowns, were greeted with shouts and sing-alongs from the crowd.\u00a0 <\/span>Part of the segment was an awesome male soloist serenading his girl with \u201cWhen I First Saw You,\u201d that ended with a cuddly hug. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>When Shrek and the Donkey walked out on stage, the crowd roared with laughter, offering the theater a counterpoint to the earlier themes of heartbreak and sadness. Shrek, however, sang a melancholy song too, \u201cThat\u2019s Not who I\u2019d Be.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>But his Donkey friend came to his rescue with \u201cDonkey Dance!\u201d and also sang the \u201cDonkey Song.\u201d With that, the audience burst into hysterical laughter, especially when the Donkey jumped on Shrek\u2019s back for a ride.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>For the finale \u201cFreak Flag\u201d entertained with different Halloween characters singing and dancing like, well, \u201cFreaks.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>An unhappy Pinocchio in the end burst out smiling and led the dancers enthusiastically in embracing their \u201cfreakiness.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>In addition to its talented cast and director, costumes were stunning as each musical took the audience back in time. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
