She sees the bitter side of “Horse Country” every day, animals left with no food or water, beaten and abused then abandoned.

It takes more than a handful of treats to fix a horse that is afraid of being touched. And it takes a lot of volunteers just to keep the organization operating. Some call these volunteers heroes, but Gonzalez — who is executive director of the organization — calls them horse angels.

When horses’ lives are on the line, it takes more than working a nine-hour shift to keep things running smoothly. It also takes patience, compassion, commitment and courage.

Volunteer Jane Davis, Daytona State College’s IT Project Manager, speaks highly of Stable Haven, which incorporated as a charitable organization in 2010.

From the time she was a little girl, horses were a part of Davis’ life. She’s owned several horses and for years was a member of the British Pony Club in her native England. After a two-decade gap of living a horseless life, a student told her about Stable Haven. She and Gonzalez became fast friends. The relationship blossomed and Davis is now part of the stable’s board of directors in her role as chief communication officer.

In her down time she is Stable Haven’s photographer, as well, helping to manage the nonprofit’s website and also donating time at the barn when she can. She even coordinated a benefit raffle last year, working with a local tack store that donated a saddle to be raffled off.

“I think students could definitely benefit from volunteering at Stable Haven,” Davis said, explaining that, as an animal rights activist, she thinks some of DSC’s clubs could serve the community and would enjoy volunteering at Stable Haven.

Although the stable’s community is tight knit, it can be a struggle to make ends meet. While Gonzalez’s barn is a haven for horses in need, like everywhere else, things break and work needs to be done. A few helping hands can make a world of a difference when there are so many horses in need of love and care.

In April 2011 Chanel, a Palomino horse, came to Stable Haven looking like a skeleton that had skin glued on it. As of this November, Chanel has filled out and looks as great as she feels. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the before and after photos and introductory video on Stable Haven’s website speak volumes.

The website features profiles on horses up for adoption, along with adoptions papers that that can be downloaded. All horses looking for new homes have been rehabilitated and are ready for all levels of rider.

For those unable to adopt or donate their time, there are other ways to help. Even the smallest monetary donations feed horses and keep them warm during the cold months. One bag of feed costs $18. Stable Haven needs approximately 32 bags of feed per week for their horses. For the entire month, it costs Gonzalez over $2,000 dollars to feed them — and that’s not including hay or medical bills. Volunteers to muck out the stalls and other chores are always welcome, such as corporate sponsors like local Realtor Mike Glisson.

Stable Haven is a non-profit organization that operates fully on the kindness of others. Without their donors and sponsors, this humble barn in New Smyrna would not be able to save the lives of so many animals.
