Berning gave a quick tour of the campus ceramic facility, starting with the room where the stoneware clay is made and the kiln room, where pieces are fired. Inside the studio, he demonstrated basic pottery wheel techniques for the class while answering questions from people attending the workshop.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrowing clay isn\u2019t about strength, it\u2019s about technique and finesse,\u201d said Berning, who has over 20 years of experience working in the medium.<\/p>\n
People of various ages and backgrounds attended the free one-hour event, including Doris Tanksley, 66, of Corpus Christ. \u201cMy niece wanted me and my granddaughter to check things out. I really like it, it\u2019s very interesting,\u201d said Tanksley, who is visiting family in Daytona Beach.<\/p>\n
Several pottery wheels were set up for anyone who wished to give clay throwing a try themselves. Seats quickly filled with attendees eager to get their hands dirty and to get a feel for the clay.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe most fun part of this is that it\u2019s a complete and utter mess,\u201d said Alexandra Wakefield, an AA student at DSC.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started the brown bag sessions a couple years ago. The Studio Arts department all donate our time to hold these workshops for students and the community. We also have programs available for veterans,\u201d said Berning.<\/p>\n
Upcoming brown bag studio arts sessions include a lecture about character creation in the gaming industry from UCF Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy\u2019s Nick Zuccarello on Oct. 4; a linocut printmaking workshop with professors Viktoryia McGrath and Stacey Reynolds on Nov. 1; and \u201cThe Hub on Canal\u201d lecture about art hub functions presented by New Smyrna Beach\u2019s Canal Street Art Hub board of directors president Richard England on Dec. 6.
