HEARTWALK\u00a0 \u2014 <\/strong>The annual Volusia\/Flagler Heart Walk to be Friday, Sept. 15, 5:15- 7 p.m. at Daytona International Speedway, 1801 W. International Speedway Blvd. For many years, DSC students and employees have worked together to raise thousands of dollars for this worthy cause. Every year, nearly 800,000 Americans are lost to cardiovascular disease and stroke, including over 1,500 in Volusia County.\u00a0 DSC President tom LoBasso will serve as a team captain this year and encourages all to join him or one of our other DSC team captains in support of this initiative.\u00a0 For information, contact this year\u2019s chairperson, Paul Barnett, at 506-3637.<\/p>\n

WISE LECTURES \u2014<\/strong> The DSC Foundation created the WISE program to provide continuing education and cultural enrichment activities to senior members in the community. Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2-3:30 p.m., will be \u201cDon\u2019t Be A Victim, Protect Yourself,\u201d with Daytona Beach Police Dept. Chief Craig Capri, who will share steps you can take to avoid becoming a victim of crime. Also, learn about the different community events that are coming up and how to best prepare for them. Both of those events will be in the Advanced Technology College, ATC Multipurpose Room<\/p>\n

FOUNDATION GALA<\/strong> \u2014<\/strong> \u201cA Diamond & Silver Celebration\u201d will be 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, in the Hosseini Center Ballroom, featuring live entertainment and foods from around the world prepared by students of the Hospitality and Culinary Arts program and their professors. Proceeds from the event go to scholarships for DSC students. Admission is $75 per ticket and tickets may be purchased by calling 506-3407.<\/p>\n

HOMECOMING 2017\u00a0 \u2014 <\/strong>Last November, the campus and community reveled in Falcon spirit as Daytona State alumni, friends and students flocked to the Daytona Beach Campus for the college’s first homecoming festival in decades. This year’s homecoming 4-day extravaganza is set Oct. 18-21, featuring repeat activities like the Mr. & Ms. DSC pageant, plus a Tailgate Party with games including a Corn Hole Tournament, food, entertainment and more. CAF\u00c9 101 \u2014<\/strong>The teaching caf\u00e9 and kitchen\u00a0is operated\u00a0by\u00a0Daytona State College students, under the supervision of our chef instructors.\u00a0Caf\u00e9 101, which has been highly rated by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, is open for lunch\u00a0Monday through\u00a0Friday\u00a0with seatings at 11:30 a.m. or noon and dinner on\u00a0Wednesday evenings with\u00a0seatings \u00a0of 5:30 or 6 p.m.\u00a0Caf\u00e9 101 features a fixed-price\u00a0menu of $11 for lunch and $15 for dinner\u00a0(including tax).\u00a0Patrons receive an appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage.\u00a0Vegetarian meals are available by request.\u00a0Gratuities are welcome and help fund student scholarships.\u00a0Credit cards are accepted.\u00a0 Seating is by reservation only.\u00a0 To make reservations\u00a0 call\u00a0 506-3859. COFFEE\/BAKE SHOPS<\/strong> \u2014 Fresh-baked goodies and coffee is served from morning to early afternoon in the foyer of the Mori Hosseini Center (Bldg. 1200). Hours: 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. There is an alternate location in the campus Library, Bldg. 231, Daytona Beach. Hours are abbreviated during summer months.<\/p>\n

\u201cFalcon Fuel\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 New Grab & Go Food Pantry offers free light snacks and small nonperishable food items. DSC students can \u201cgrab\u201d before or between classes and \u201cgo\u201d about their successful day (limit three items per day). If you had to skip breakfast or are short on lunch money, DON\u2019T go to class hungry! It has been proven that full bellies lead to strong minds. Located in the Center for Women & Men (B-300, R-227), Daytona Campus. Hours of Operation:\u00a0 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Must be enrolled with DSC student ID. <\/a>THE ARTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

CHORAL AUDITIONS \u00a0\u2014<\/strong> Recently appointed Associate Professor of Choral\/Vocal Music at Daytona State College, Dr. Jean Hickman is seeking singers to participate in a choral ensemble at DSC. Auditions can be in person or completed virtually. The virtual audition requires applicants to complete a DSC Choirs General Information Form<\/a>, record a video singing a verse and chorus of a classical, popular or jazz song that showcases vocal ability, as well as sing along to one of the voice-suited scale exercises (soprano<\/a>, alto<\/a>, tenor<\/a>, baritone\/bass<\/a>), and submit the video to singatdaytona@gmail.com<\/a>. Participants will receive confirmation of video receipt. Those who prefer to audition in person can contact Hickman at singatdaytona@gmail.com<\/a>. Audition results will be emailed by Aug. 25.<\/p>\n

COMMUNITY BAND \u2014 <\/strong>Will commence with an open rehearsal, including new and returning members, on Monday, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. in the Goddard Center for Music and Dance, rm. 103, on the Daytona Beach Campus. Rehearsals are Mondays from 7 to 9:50 p.m. For information, call Douglas Peterson, senior professor and chair of the Mike Curb College of Music, Entertainment and Art<\/a>, 506-3276 or Doug.Peterson@DaytonaState.edu<\/a>. developed in the spirit of the old John Philip Sousa Bands, performs traditional and modern classics as well as marches, Broadway hits and movie selections. ORCHESTRA AUDITIONS \u00a0\u2014<\/strong> Under the baton of Peter Waidelich, associate professor, the DSC Symphony Orchestra comprises students, amateurs and professionals who perform a wide variety of classical and lighter music. All string, wind and percussion players in the area are invited to join. The DSC Symphony Orchestra functions as the only full-sized community symphony orchestra in the area and presents three major concerts per season. The orchestra will hold its first rehearsal Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 7 p.m. in the Goddard Center for Music and Dance, rm.103, on the Daytona Beach Campus. For information, call 506-3276.<\/p>\n

JAZZ AUDITIONS\u00a0 \u2014 <\/strong>DSC\u2019s Jazz Ensemble<\/strong>, under the direction of Abe Alam, is open to community members who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums or assorted percussion instruments. Rehearsals begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, from 7 to 9:50 p.m. in Goddard Center for Music and Dance, rm.103, Daytona Beach Campus, The jazz ensemble focuses on contemporary compositions and arrangements for the big band. The group is open to all who can read music. There are two to three performances per semester and some may be off campus. Weekly rehearsals are scheduled Wednesday evenings. DANCE AUDITIONS\u00a0 \u2014 <\/strong>DSC\u2019s modern dance company, Dance Theater, under the artistic direction of Kevin Veiga, will hold auditions Wednesday, Aug. 30, and Wednesday, Sept. 6, 3-4:30 p.m.\u00a0Auditions will be in the Goddard Center for Music and Dance, Dance Studio (rm. 104), on the college\u2019s Daytona Beach Campus. Auditions are open to the community and members need not be students. Dance Theater members receive college credit if enrolled in DAA2640. Rehearsals are alternate Mondays and every Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m., starting Monday, Sept. 11, with other rehearsals scheduled as needed. THE ENGLISH CLUB<\/strong> \u2014 A local chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta.\u00a0\u00a0It meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays at 2:30 p.m. in Bldg. 500, rm\u00a0 220.\u00a0 Refreshments are served at every meeting.\u00a0 A movie is also shown at every meeting.\u00a0\u00a0Past films include \u201cFive Easy Pieces,\u201d \u201cAnne of a Thousand Days\u201d and \u201cBonnie and Clyde.\u201d\u00a0 On occasion, the\u00a0club\u00a0puts on poetry readings.\u00a0At least twice a year\u00a0 members attends performances of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION<\/strong> \u2014 Academic support for students enrolled in difficult required courses.\u00a0 It is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and a peer-facilitated out-of-class study group that incorporates study skills with course content.
