SOUTHEAST MUSEUM OF PHOTOGRAPHY<\/strong> \u2014 Offers interactive and rotating exhibits in the Mori Hosseini Center, Bldg. 1200. Admission to the Museum is free. All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted. Museum hours: 11-5 p.m. Tues, Thurs & Fri; Wed: 11-7 p.m. Weekends: 1-5p.m. June, July and December Hours: Tues-Sun: 12-4 p.m. Call 386-506-4475. All discussions are wheelchair-accessible. \nUCF THESIS EXHIBITION 2017<\/strong> \u2014 Graduating Student Photography from the University of Central Florida (Daytona Beach) Exhibition Opening Reception: Tuesday, May 2, 6\u20138 p.m.
\nNow in its 6th year, the UCF Thesis Exhibition showcases portfolios by recent graduates of the Bachelor of Science in Photography program from the University of Central Florida, which along with Daytona State College and the Southeast Museum of Photography, collaborate in a joint partnership known as The Southeast Center for Photographic Studies. The students’ thesis work involves photographic explorations of topics that are both personal and public, color and black-and-white, moving and still. This work is a culmination of four years of study in photography.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cDEPARTURES 2017\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 A Juried Student Exhibition. Exhibition Opening Reception: Wednesday, May 3, 5\u20137 p.m. \u201cDepartures\u201d is a juried exhibition that highlights photography by recent graduates of the Daytona State College photography program. This is the eleventh year that the Southeast Museum of Photography has had the honor of showcasing the work of these recent graduates and it will continue to be a yearly summer event at the museum.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWITH HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Reflections on the Permanent Collection
\nSoon to be displayed in the downstairs gallery, from March 1-May 12, is an exhibition drawn from the permanent collection of the museum featuring some of its most iconic imagery. The curation and context of the show has been provided by the students of Daytona State College, including sections of Professor Jayanti Seiler’s class “Photography as an Art Form.”<\/p>\n

\u201cA HOUSE IS NOT A HOME\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 Works by Brooke DiDonato
\nAccompanying the permanent collection photographs will be the work of Brooke DiDonato. Born and raised in Ohio, she is now based in New York City. She graduated with a degree in photojournalism from Kent State University in 2012. Her work explores the complexity of human cognition, and what happens when psychological anomalies manifest in reality. By placing viewers in the context of a narrative with no clear beginning or end, she forces them to ask \u201cHow did we get here?,\u201d \u201cWhat happens next?\u201d and \u201cCan we go on?\u201d \u201cA House is Not a Home\u201d is a series of self-portraits conveying feelings of isolation and discontent experienced when returning to her hometown in Ohio. <\/p>\n

FAMILY PHOTO FUN DAY<\/strong> \u2014 May 13, 1-3 p.m. \u201cPaper Blooms: Decorative Flower Vases (All skill levels). Come make a personalized flower vase that is bursting with colorful paper blooms and pictures of you! Choose from a variety of flower types \u2014y ou can mix and match colors and styles \u2014 and embellish with buttons, ribbon and glitter. Best of all, your portrait and sunny smile will peek out from the center of the vase, making it a great gift to give for Mother’s Day or add a touch of springtime cheer to any room. Enjoy an afternoon of free parent-child art and photography sessions designed for children aged 6-13 and led by skilled and supportive staff members. Please note: All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.<\/p>\n

FOOD STYLING<\/strong> \u2014 May 27, 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. \u201cA Recipe for Success: Food Styling Tips and Tricks.\u201d This workshop presented by the Southeast Museum is designed for photographers and photo-enthusiasts alike. Participants will learn about the basics of food styling, plus the tips and tricks it takes to achieve the ideal shot. Charles and Andra will walk participants step-by-step through their process: the fundamentals of recipe\/food selection, prep work, prop styling and finally, getting the signature photograph. Whether you are looking to expand your skill set for future job opportunities or take aesthetically pleasing photographs for a personal food blog, cookbook or simply your meals\u2014and you want to share with a larger audience via social media\u2014this workshop is for you! Cost: $70, register by Friday, May 12 and receive $10 off!<\/p>\n

FALCON TO FALCON SERIES<\/strong> \u2014 \u201cActive Learning, Simulation, and the Art of teaching Today’s Learners,\u201d presented by Dr. Kim Beechler. This session will give participants the opportunity to discuss the challenges of learners in the classroom today. A part of the solution for reaching these students includes active learning techniques including simulations, small groups, and other creative ideas for hands-on learning. As expected, this will be a hands-on session so bring finger foods! Daytona Beach Campus, DSC\/UCF Hall Bldg. 140, Rm. 206. Call 506-3837.<\/p>\n

OPEN HOUSE EVENTS<\/strong> \u2014 Speak with college representatives about programs offered at DSC. Learn about Bachelor of Applied Science, Bachelor of Science in education, Bachelor of Science in engineering technology, Bachelor of Science in information technology, Bachelor of Science in nursing, Associate of Arts, Associate of Science and certificate programs. Speak with Financial Aid experts and Dual Enrollment presentations will be offered for students wanting to get started on college while in high school. Refreshments will be provided and Open House culminates with a free drawing for two $500 DSC scholarships (must be present to win) presented by the Daytona State College Foundation. GRADUATION<\/strong> \u2014 May 15, 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. The commencement ceremony is held at the end of our Spring term, and includes all graduates from the previous fall semester, and current candidates for spring and upcoming summer semesters. Summer Work Hours<\/strong> \u2014 May 22- Aug. 4. DSC will be closed beginning at noon each Friday between May 26 and Aug. 4. While the college will be open from Monday morning through noon on Friday, all areas of the college will remain open and available to students and staff during those hours. <\/a> GOOD EATS<\/strong><\/p>\n

CAF\u00c9 101<\/strong> \u2014The teaching caf\u00e9 and kitchen is operated by Daytona State College students, under the supervision of our chef instructors. Caf\u00e9 101, which has been highly rated by the Daytona Beach News-Journal, is open for lunch Monday through Friday with seatings at 11:30 a.m. or noon and dinner on Wednesday evenings with seatings of 5:30 or 6 p.m. Caf\u00e9 101 features a fixed-price menu of $11 for lunch and $15 for dinner (including tax). Patrons receive an appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage. Vegetarian meals are available by request. Gratuities are welcome and help fund student scholarships. Credit cards are accepted. Seating is by reservation only. To make reservations call 506-3859. The Caf\u00e9 closes over the summer months. (Check with venues for summer dining hours)<\/p>\n

COFFEE\/BAKE SHOPS<\/strong> \u2014 Fresh-baked goodies and coffee is served from morning to early afternoon in the foyer of the Mori Hosseini Center (Bldg. 1200). Hours: 7:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Thursdays and Fridays. There is an alternate location in the campus Library, Bldg. 231, Daytona Beach. Hours are abbreviated during summer months.<\/p>\n

\u201cFALCON FUEL\u201d<\/strong> \u2014 New Grab & Go Food Pantry offers free light snacks and small nonperishable food items. DSC students can \u201cgrab\u201d before or between classes and \u201cgo\u201d about their successful day (limit three items per day). If you had to skip breakfast or are short on lunch money, DON\u2019T go to class hungry! It has been proven that full bellies lead to strong minds. Located in the Center for Women & Men (B-300, R-227), Daytona Campus. Hours of Operation: 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Must be enrolled with DSC student ID. Staff and faculty who want to contribute to the pantry can bring items such as granola bars, fruit cups and packs of raisins to the Center for Women & Men. Instead of building 30 classrooms side-by-side, he built them one on top of another. Maybe that accounts for the wacky goings-on on the 30th floor. Where else will you find tango dancing mayhem, children being turned into apples, and dead rats wearing raincoats? Just don’t ask for Miss Zarves…because she doesn’t exist. Free to Daytona State College students as well as Volusia and Flagler county elementary, middle and high school students, all others $8 per person or $15 for two.
