Six community colleges have already transitioned into the policy of a smoke-free campus.

“Most of the money is for education opportunities for the smokers. Our grant is in its second year, and our goal is that in five years to hopefully have a smoke free and tobacco free campus. The grant itself in the proposal is for five years. So we’re not in any rush,” said Nancy Homan, the Fitness and Aquatic Coordinator at DSC.

Homan explained that while the proposal is not being rushed, there will be a lot of thought going into it, as well as the consideration of students opinions.

In a recent survey conducted by the “No Butts” Grant Program Committee during the spring semester of 2011, 70.1 percent of participants agreed to support a tobacco free policy on all of the DSC campuses. Of the survey participants, 82.5 percent stated that they did not use products with tobacco, while 70.3 percent said that they experienced uneasiness when having to pass through cigarette smoke while entering a school building.

“It’s not that they have to quit smoking, it’s just on this campus. When you stop and think about it, a lot of the professions that we are preparing our students for: Nursing, Police, Teachers, they cannot smoke on their jobs. These are things that have to be considered in preparing our students for employment,” said Homan.

While some students may oppose the proposal, DSC student Kristen Calvin supports the idea.

“I think it’s better for other students. It’s secondhand smoke. It’s cleaner air, you don’t have someone come into class and they reek of smoke. I think that if they really have to smoke, then they should go off of campus. Just to be thoughtful to other students. If they’re really that stressed out, then they can go home to smoke,” she said.

The proposal suggests a completely tobacco free environment, which would include chew and other loose tobacco products. Although it has not been decided as to whether DSC will be a smoke free campus, or a tobacco free campus, other community colleges have decided on complete tobacco free environments.

With community colleges taking a stand against tobacco, DSC will come to the conclusion as to whether to join the fight. Adult education on secondhand smoke and the effects of smoking have been instituted at the campus, as well as classes to help aid students quit smoking.

Juan Cosme-Lara, another student at DSC is also in favor of the proposal.

“Honestly, I think it is good for the whole campus environment. It does bring a more positive outlook on how Daytona State College would carry itself. Not only that, but there are a lot of companies out there that are implementing no smoking at all within the workplace. Why not with education, the brain stem where it all starts?” he said.

The grant is already in its second year, and the final decision will not be confirmed for many months to come.

“It’s nothing immediate, there’s no rush. It’s going to take a few months of getting the information out to all of the students. We plan on being at all of the welcome back days coming up to get input on them. It’s a lengthy timeline of up to 18 months. This is not a decision that has been made,” she concludes.

More information on the surveys and the smoke free campus mentioned in this article can be found on the college website.

By Emelia Hitchner Daytona State College may be joining many other community colleges in the battle against tobacco products to encourage a smoke free environment for students.
