Director of Theatre at DSC and director of \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d Samantha Stern, helped to infuse New York City\u2019s Broadway in the News Journal Center with the popular 1950\u2019s and 60\u2019s music of Leiber and Stoller. \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d filled the Gillespie Theater inside the News Journal Center for six shows over two weekends with energy and laughter the whole way through. A non-advertised performance was given to students of Ivy Hawn Charter School of the Arts on the Friday morning of March 4<sup>th<\/sup>. Students of the Lake Helen Charter School clapped, laughed, and danced in their seats throughout the show. It is the longest-running musical review in Broadway History. The popular song, \u201cOn Broadway\u201d was the opening number for the 1995 Tony Awards performed by the original cast. In 1994 the \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d 20<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary Tour featured <em>The Coasters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Various songs in \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d were originally recorded by famous quartets such as The Coasters The Drifters and The Monkees. The performing quartet in DSC\u2019s \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d consisted of Jamont\u00e9 Bruten (Victor), Kerry Alce (Adrian), Dwight Davis (Ken) and Gabriel Hannans (Fred). \u201cOn Broadway\u201d piece by the quartet were so powerful that the audience clapped enthusiastically and cheered along the fellas as they danced. The smooth voices, energy, and choreography were superb. The choreography by Kim Ball kept the energy flowing throughout the whole show. Ball is a well-known and recognized dance instructor and choreographer in Volusia County.<\/p>\n<p>Jamont\u00e9 Bruten (Victor) amazed audiences with his delightful tone and control with his solo of \u201cI Who Have Nothing.\u201d Bruten owned the stage with his cat-like dance moves in \u201cD.W. Washburn\u201d and \u201cTreat Me Nice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kerry Alce (Adrian) wowed audiences with his powerful voice and animation in \u201cThere Goes my Baby\u201d and \u201cLove Potion #9.\u201d Alce swooned with his piano based solo \u201cStay A While.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gabriel Hannans \u2018(Fred) smooth sonorous voice wooed the crowd and had them slapping their legs in laughter with \u201cLittle Egypt and Charlie Brown.<\/p>\n<p>Dwight Davis (Ken) gave an engaging rendition of \u201cDance With Me\u201d and charming solo with \u201cLoving You.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>James Harrington (Michael) kept audiences singing along with his Rock N\u2019 Roll swagger in \u201cRuby Baby\u201d and \u201cKansas City.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alexa Miles (Pattie) gave emotional standing ovation provoking performances in \u201cPearl\u2019s a Singer,\u201d and \u201cI Keep Forgettin\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rebekah Tyson (BJ), floored the audience in amazement with her seemingly effortless vocal power in \u201cDance With Me,\u201d \u201cFools Fall in Love\u201d and \u201cHound Dog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brittany Nicole Lewis (Brenda) turned the heat up with her voice in the sassy numbers \u201cTrouble,\u201d and \u201cDon Juan\u201d and \u201cYou\u2019re the Boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Liara Iler (DeLee) sweet serenade \u201cFalling\u201d captivated the band member, \u201cPaul,\u201d and whole audience. Her duet with Lewis \u201cTrouble\u201d a crowd favorite.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaul\u201d is actually Paul Yanochko who is part of the live band playing on stage along with fellow DSC musicians Yanni Moraites, Daniel Lunde, Pat Gallo, Tim Dunn, alumni and professional pianist Niki Mousikos, and Guitar Instructor Professor Abe Alam.<\/p>\n<p>All four female powerhouse performers came together for \u201cI\u2019m a Woman,\u201d and earned a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<p>After the March 4<sup>th<\/sup> performance, a chaperone from Ivy Hawn Charter School gave a compliment to the entire cast by saying, \u201cI saw \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d on Broadway, and any one of you could do it.\u201d Appropriately, all of the cast members raised their hands when asked by one of the students, \u201cWho wants to perform professionally?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those who missed out on this production, \u201cSmokey Joe\u2019s Caf\u00e9\u201d is planning a Broadway return in July 2016 with previews and official opening August 18th, according to Playbill.com.<\/p>\n<p>For information about upcoming performances or to purchase tickets for future shows please visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.daytonastate.edu\/thearts\/\">www.daytonastate.edu\/thearts<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sasha Lucas InMotion Staff Writer &nbsp; Mike Curb\u2019s College of Music, Entertainment and Art delivered Broadway-style performances to six full houses of audiences in the Gillespy Theater at the News Journal Center of Dayton State College.
