This exhibition brings together images by seven documentary\u00a0photographers that captured life in the years leading up to and during\u00a0the Civil Rights Movement in America, ending with the untimely death\u00a0of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.\u00a0in 1968. While created nearly\u00a0a half-century ago, these\u00a0images are indicative of the\u00a0ongoing struggle for race\u00a0equality in America. They serve as a powerful reminder\u00a0of the sacrifices, struggles, and\u00a0inspirational acts of those that\u00a0participated in this movement,\u00a0the changes they instilled, and\u00a0the challenges that remain.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.smponline.org\/ex_RSexton_TerraIncognita.html\"><strong>TERRA INCOGNITA: \u201cPhotographs of\u00a0America&#8217;s Third Coast<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u201d <\/strong>\u2014 Richard Sexton<br \/>\nLatin for &#8220;unknown land,&#8221; Terra Incognita is the result of a 15 year study of the marsh,\u00a0scrub lands, dunes, beaches, swamps and forests along the Gulf Coast from the mouth\u00a0of the Mississippi River to the Florida Panhandle. This project, by nationally recognized\u00a0photographer and author Sexton, examines the delicate relationship between\u00a0man and the environment. Organized by the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.<\/p>\n<p>Feb. 24\u2013May 15<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/smponline.org\/ex_GaryMetz_QuakingAspen.html\"><strong>QUAKING ASPEN<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 Gary Metz<br \/>\nIn the 1970s, the late photographer and educator Gary Metz generated a significant body of work that was very much in the spirit of the times. Metz&#8217;s \u201cQuaking Aspen: a Lyric Complaint\u201d challenged the first 100 years of landscape photography, which had placed a major emphasis on depicting nature as sublime, heroic and unspoiled. Unlike previous photographers who glorified nature, Metz and his contemporaries wrenched photography out of the national parks and replaced the scenic with the vernacular of the everyday American landscape.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/smponline.org\/ex_FredStein_NewYork.html\"><strong>IN EXILE: Paris and New York<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 Photographs of Fred Stein<br \/>\nStein was an early champion of street and documentary photography recognized for his iconic images of life in Paris and New York from the 1930s through the early 1960s as well as portraits of important writers, artists, scientists and celebrities of the time, such as Albert Einstein, Salvador Dal\u00ed, and Marlene Dietrich. While Stein originally set out to be a public defender, his pastime of photography became his livelihood when he fled from Germany to Paris in 1933, the year Hitler was appointed Chancellor. He fled again from Paris to New York City in 1941. Members are focused on publishing and reading each other&#8217;s works. GPA of 3.5 required and no less than 3.2 in any given semester. In Daytona Beach, the PTK campus chapter\u00a0 meets first and third Thursdays at 2 p.m. in Building 130, room 110. Contact Linke at 506-3280 or Wyatt at 506-4092.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION<\/strong> \u2014 Academic support for students enrolled in difficult required courses.\u00a0 It is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and a peer-facilitated out-of-class study group that incorporates study skills with course content.
