{"id":324,"date":"2012-04-15T09:50:08","date_gmt":"2012-04-15T14:50:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/?p=324"},"modified":"2018-05-13T18:43:13","modified_gmt":"2018-05-13T22:43:13","slug":"324","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/oldsite\/324\/","title":{"rendered":"Ribbon cutting ceremony commemorates new commons area"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Emelia Hitchner<\/p>\n<p>A brief ribbon-cutting ceremony marked\u00a0the beginning of a new gathering area\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">where students and groups will have the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">opportunity to break the monotony of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">classroom settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>President Carol Eaton from Daytona State\u00a0College, with the assistance of Cathy Webb,\u00a0Student Government Association president,\u00a0introduced the freshly constructed student\u00a0commons area on March 30 to an eager\u00a0mixture of faculty and students.<\/p>\n<p>Upon arrival as the new president of DSC\u00a0last August, Eaton felt inspired to rally\u00a0senior staff to consider expanding on the\u00a0landscape that could benefit the learning\u00a0environment for students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our focus is on our students and their\u00a0ability to learn and to grow and to be a\u00a0part of the campus community. We think\u00a0the environment is very important,&#8221; stated\u00a0Eaton, prior to the ribbon-cutting.<\/p>\n<p>Workers, contractors and people from DJ\u00a0Design Architects were present to witness\u00a0the ceremony and add to the excitement of\u00a0the recent campus addition.<\/p>\n<p>Named &#8220;The Landing,&#8221; the space was\u00a0created to cater to the needs of students\u00a0desiring a place to hang out, as well as to\u00a0groups wishing to stage performances or\u00a0gather for meetings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The design is meant for the ability for\u00a0groups to come together and have speeches\u00a0and to have fun times together,&#8221; said Eaton\u00a0of the layout.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion, the construction of the\u00a0area aroused activity among students. The\u00a0staging quarter of The Landing features\u00a0a spacious place for students to enjoy the\u00a0open air while still receiving cover from\u00a0the roof above.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m really excited about the wonderful\u00a0space we have here. It&#8217;s going to be easy\u00a0access to students all over the campus.<\/p>\n<p>The students have begun to enjoy this\u00a0area already and we hope this becomes\u00a0a daily gathering place for presentations\u00a0and performances,&#8221; said an excited Webb\u00a0during the ceremony. &#8220;We&#8217;d like to hear\u00a0from you and what you&#8217;d like to use this\u00a0area for, going forward from here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With the new addition of the student\u00a0commons area, DSC has taken a step\u00a0forward in providing the necessary\u00a0elements for a beautiful and comfortable\u00a0study environment.
