Photo by Lisa Silversmith \/ In Motion<\/figcaption><\/figure>About 30 people were in attendance and consisted of people on the search committee, DSC employees, Student Government Association members and members from the DSC Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n
To start the discussion, Keefer cited the college\u2019s mission statement, which \u201cemphasizes student success, embracing excellence and diversity, as well as fostering innovation to enhance teaching and learning.\u201d She also explained the responsibilities of the president in relation to the board of trustees.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe board sets the vision of policy for the college and the president actually
\ncarries it out on a day to day basis,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Keefer asked a series of questions to the audience such as, \u201cWhat does the
\ncommunity need from the president? What strengths do you want to see in the president? What qualifications?\u201d<\/p>\n
The responses varied. In terms of the needs of the community, respondents articulated someone who is approachable to the needs of the community and can adjust, leadership qualities to develop the workforce in Volusia and Flagler counties, fiscally responsible so the college can provide more affordable education and offer a wide range of cultural opportunities.<\/p>\n
As far as strengths and qualifications, respondents noted someone who is a visionary, strategic in thinking, transparent and open, a political mindset to ensure state funding for the college, familiar with how the Florida College System functions, a background in education and has a long term vision to engage students.<\/p>\n
Former DSC President Carol Eaton stepped down as president back in January after the board didn\u2019t renew her contract last August. Thomas LoBasso was then
\nappointed interim president by the board until a permanent candidate is found for the presidency.<\/p>\n
Since then, Vice Chair of the board Forough Hosseini has put together a search committee of 17 that encompasses different parts of the community to search for a new president. They have held monthly meetings since February. The process to find a new president is estimated at 8 months from now.
