There is always more stress in the competitive field to do better and pull off more maneuvers, while those that surf for a hobby are more relaxed and just enjoy it for what it is.

Although DSC finished near the top, overall, it marked the end of their three-win streak in competitions. Earlier in this year, choppy conditions set the scene at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet where the DSC Surf Club still scored enough points in both the men’s and women’s divisions to take home first-place team honors, for the third consecutive time, in a regional contest sponsored by the National Scholastic Surfing Association.

During that event, team captain Jacob Kotchpowell took second place against competitors from the University of Florida, University of North Florida and other Florida
colleges and universities in the Southeast/North Conference of NSSA. Cory Anderson took fourth place in the final heat and Blake Bordis took fifth place. Daytona State has taken home the gold in a regional contest. In the women’s division, Amanda Buemi took first place and Amber Jeckovich took third.

Bruce Cook, who took over advising the club for Harden seven years ago, is still hopeful for the chance of making it to nationals, saying that, “I think we have pretty good chance at making it this year.
