DSC Faculty, programs earn accolades<\/strong><\/p>\n

Daytona State College English professor Sandra Offiah-Hawkins has been notified by Pearson Publishers that her essay \u201cAn Account of Alfred E. Cooley\u2019s Plight in the Face of Hurricane Katrina\u201d has just been accepted for publication in two of its reading and writing textbooks.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, political science professor Dr. Trey Orndorff has been named among the best in the Florida College System. Orndorff, 31, earned runner-up status as Professor of the Year during the Association of Florida Colleges\u2019 65th Annual Convention in Destin. The organization represents Florida\u2019s 28 state and community colleges.<\/p>\n

The Miami University of Ohio graduate joined Daytona State in 2011 and quickly became one of the college\u2019s most regarded professors by students and faculty alike. He has been a pioneer of leveraging technology into instructional pedagogy via the college\u2019s cutting-edge \u201cClassroom of the Future.\u201d He has been featured in the Orlando Sentinel and is a frequent guest on the local broadcast political talk-show circuit. Orndorff currently serves as parliamentarian for the college\u2019s Faculty Senate and last year was awarded its Dr. John Guthrie, Jr. Award for Research and Professional Development.<\/p>\n

Todd Richardson, an attorney and assistant professor of Paralegal Studies at Daytona State College, has published an article examining trends in international law related to cloud-based data storage. The article appeared in Facts & Findings, the bi-monthly periodical of the National Association of Legal Assistants.<\/p>\n

Richardson notes that legal professionals should be aware of how advances in technology combined with a global economy may affect application of the Fourth Amendment as it relates to the search and seizure of computer data, particularly when the data are stored in foreign countries. He cites a recent court ruling involving Microsoft Corp., Palm Coast Writing Center schedules workshop Patricia Isringhausen at the Writing Center in Palm Coast
\nhas announced a number of upcoming skills-building workshops that will be offered to student this semester. The spring series will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in Building 2, Room 106, of the Palm Coast\/Flagler campus. For information, call 386-246-4814 or 506-3297.
\nwhich upheld that the U.S. government could legally obtain data stored by Microsoft on a server located in Dublin, Ireland. Microsoft is expected to appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n

Among hundreds of colleges and universities in the nation offering bachelor degree programs online, Daytona State College has again ranked in the top 10, coming in at No. 2, according to rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, continuing its prestigious placement in the category.<\/p>\n

In the 2015 Top Online Bachelor\u2019s Programs rankings, Daytona State stood among the best based on criteria such as the quality and experience of its faculty and instructional delivery. DSC entered its fully online bachelor\u2019s degrees, the Bachelor of Applied Science in Supervision and Management, Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology for the rankings consideration.<\/p>\n

College hosts financial aid event Feb. 28<\/strong><\/p>\n

Returning and first-time-in-college students will find a clear path to applying for federal tuition assistance during a free statewide event, hosted locally by Daytona State College, designed to help anyone planning to pursue higher education.<\/p>\n

College Goal (Saturday) Sunday or CGS!Florida, part of the national CGS project, is scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Daytona Beach and DeLand campuses. Financial aid administrators will provide college-bound students and their families with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. FAFSA helps students access billions in federal funds available for higher education. In addition, information about other financial aid resources such as state government, grants, scholarships and loans will be offered.<\/p>\n

\u201cCompleting the FAFSA can be intimidating, but it doesn\u2019t have to be,\u201d said Dick Pastor, DSC\u2019s interim vice president for student development. \u201cWhen college-bound students and their families attend the College Goal event, we can help them overcome barriers to applying for funds they need to pursue a college education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Filling out the FAFSA does not obligate the student to anything, but it does open to federal tuition support, whether students are pursuing a one-year certificate, two-year associate degree or four-year bachelor\u2019s degree at colleges or universities around the country.<\/p>\n

The event, which is open to anyone interested in qualifying for federal financial aid to go to college, will be in the Baker Academic Support Center\/computer lab, Bld. 500, on the Daytona Beach Campus, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd. On the DeLand Campus, it will be in Bert Fish Hall\/Academic Support Center, Bld. 6, room 213, at 1155 County Road 4139.<\/p>\n

Students who attend may also be eligible for a drawing for a $250 scholarship to a Florida college, provided by CGS!Florida.<\/p>\n
