In his address to those in attendance, he said, “Daytona State College is the pivot of the community because your vision, your policies are for the work force of our area. You’re a pivot because you bring people together. You are so important to our community and for that reason I feel very strong about Daytona State College.”

Hosseini, whose wife Forough is not only a board member but a former student, has been involved with DSC for well over 20 years. The couple’s first professional connection to the College was as a board member of WDSC-Channel 15, the campus television station.

As owner of ICI, a wildly successful home building developer, Mori Hosseini has used his influence and money to aid Daytona State any way he can. Through his help DSC has received over $12.5 million in Public Education Capital Outlay for 2014-2015. These funds are instrumental in the maintenance, renovation and upkeep of Daytona State College. In addition to the maintenance and renovation funds, $8 million of that funding is slotted for the construction of a new student services building on the Daytona campus. Building of the new student center will begin after the demolition of the 45-year-old Theater Center building and the projected completion date will be in 2018.

Past contributions from the businessman helped build the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary Management, a state-of-the-art culinary arts education facility that is the centerpiece of the Daytona Beach main campus. Hosseini’s current efforts are focused on continued fundraising for the new student center at the Daytona campus.

The president’s update by Dr. Carol Eaton included an introduction of the Lead Academy group that attended the board meeting as a mandatory part of their program. She then moved onto the next point on the agenda, the Workforce Summit Update.

Trustee Mary Bruno delivered a detailed report on a program called Career Pathways, which will give graduating high school students credit for classes and certifications in certain career fields. Bruno described opportunities for students in computer science, engineering and hospitality programs via the new project. She also said, “Before the holiday we hope to add business, TV production and criminal justice to the list.” Bruno made note of current campus needs in the construction and machining industry and other efforts being made to provide building trade education opportunities to interested students.

The remainder of the meeting revolved around financial statements and projections. The good news is that Daytona State College is operating within budget and all projections are on track. Building funds for the new student center are on target and a motion to hire a planning group to determine a location for the new student center was passed unanimously. Ultimately, the center will cost $24 million and efforts toward securing the money and support began two years ago. To date, the College has been granted $10.4 million of the cost from the Florida Legislature.

The meeting ended on a patriotic high note with the final motion of the day, a vote to open all meetings with the Pledge of Allegiance. This motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously with flying colors.

Kevin D.
