THE ENGLISH CLUB<\/strong>
\n\u2014 A local chapter of Sigma Kappa Delta. It meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays(Oct 8 & 22) at 2:30 p.m. in Bldg. 500, rm 220. Refreshments are served at every meeting. A movie is also shown at every meeting. Past films include \u201cFive Easy Pieces,\u201d \u201cAnne of a Thousand Days\u201d and \u201cBonnie and Clyde.\u201d On occasion, the club puts on poetry readings. At least twice a year members attends performances of the Orlando Shakespeare Theater. Any student, faculty or staff member is eligible to join. SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION<\/strong>
\n\u2014 Academic support for students enrolled in difficult required courses. It is an academic assistance program that increases student performance and a peer-facilitated out-of-class study group that incorporates study skills with course content. This program targets high-risk courses rather than highrisk students. High-risk courses are traditionally difficult due to their content. Courses targeted for this program: MAC 1105 College Algebra, BSC 1085 Hum Ant & Phys I, MCB 1010 Microbiology, CHM 1025 Intro to Chemistry, BSC 1005 Survey Biology. Through Dec. 12: \u2018PURE PHOTOGRAPHY\u2019<\/strong>
\n\u2014 Pictorial and Modern Photographs from the Syracuse University Art Collection Photographers included in this exhibition have extensive histories that span thematic periods and artistic styles. Taking their cues from masters like Edward Steichen, artists such as Berenice Abbott and Manuel \u00c1lvarez Bravo built on that foundation to explore the very art of photography. Utilizing their cameras, they created a new, modern vision for photography with a revised understanding of the camera and its capabilities. No longer tied to a pictorial past, these artists, and others, gave photography its own unique definition as an art form based solely on its ability to capture and create striking images.<\/p>\n

\u2018THE GROWTH OF A COLLECTION PART 1: 1981-2001\u2019<\/strong>
\n\u2014 In celebration of the roots and early history of the permanent collection of the SMP, the exhibit highlights the first 20 years of collecting, beginning with acquisitions by what was then Daytona Beach Community College\u2019s Gallery of Fine Arts. The second chapter in this survey exhibition gathers selected images from collecting initiated after the formal establishment of the Southeast Museum of Photography in 1992, and features acquisitions made in those first nine years of the Museum\u2019s collecting, until 2001. These two sections represent a brief sampling only of the wealth and richness of the Museum\u2019s collection. Oct. 20, 5-7 p.m.<\/p>\n

Oct.10-Feb.15\u2018JUDITH FOX: SEA OF DREAMS\u2019 <\/strong>
\n\u2014 Artist Talk and Exhibition Opening Reception: Friday, Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m. Fox has been focusing her camera on a small stretch of the ocean since 2001. The resulting body of work, \u201cSea of Dreams,\u201d speaks to the deep and joyous primal relationship humans have with the sea. This series is divided in two sections, \u201cSecret Kingdom,\u201d a reflection of the play between the pulling tides, wind and tossed up sand in the space just before the sea meets the land, and \u201cSirens\u201d \u2014 an allegorical reference to the age-old lure of the sea in which Fox imagines a group of teenagers morphed into Sirens \u2014 beautiful young women whose songs lured sailors to their deaths<\/p>\n

\u2018ALEJANDRO ALMAREZ: PORTRAITS OF POWER\u2019<\/strong>
\n\u2014 Exhibition Opening Reception: Friday, Oct.10, 6\u20138 p.m. This exhibition presents two recent series by Argentinian photographer, Alejandro Almaraz. In his series, \u201cPortraits of Power,\u201d Almaraz layers source material from paintings and photographic portraits of world leaders into single images, revealing subtle nuances within the traditional portrait across numerous countries. Almaraz also presents work from his series titled \u201cPlaces I\u2019ve Never Been Present,\u201d utilizing a similar layering method to create representations of these places through existing images found on the Internet.<\/p>\n
