Recently opening, “The Growth of a Museum Collection, Part 1: 1981-2001” highlights select pieces from the first twenty years of collection, presenting a variety of styles and themes to consider.

Alternating between varying styles of photography and various focal points, the gallery has a somewhat eclectic but fascinatingly cohesive feel to it. On the first wall alone, a variety of themes and messages emerge. Black and white portraits with a message of eloquence and refinement show that while clothing can help to define an individual, it is their demeanor that does more.

Colorful landscapes of ancient buildings weathering the test of time show a resiliency of the creative spirit of human ingenuity. Nearby lies a series of extreme close up shots of various plants, exposing the minute details of things that often lie overlooked and taken for granted.

Progressing through the gallery portraiture, varying from black and white to color shows diversity of the human experience. Some shots capture the essence of a singular emotion of a moment, unifying those within the frame. Others capture the varying feelings of those who are in a story, each reacting in a defined and unique way.

More interpretive than their fellows, the exhibition also celebrates more conceptual images. Several intriguing, multiple exposures and digitally edited images adorn the walls of the gallery; each with their own themes, but leaving much to the interpretation of the person viewing them.

A special subsection of the gallery, The Shack Collection, is dedicated to Ruth and Richard Shack, two of the museum’s most generous donors. Like the main gallery, this sports a variety of fascinating images, largely in black in white and seems designed to show the many facets of human nature. The images exhibited jump from portrait to landscape and architecture to interior with only a tangential pattern. Each image has a majesty all its own, but one set of images alongside each other present the best example. An image of an old Venetian building with incredible exterior detail next to a huge concrete dam being constructed shows the majesty of design and the majesty of scale, all in two simple images.

The “Growth of a Museum Collection, Part 1: 1981-2001” opened September 12 at the Southeastern Museum of Photography in the Hosseini Center on the Daytona State main campus and will be on display until December 14.

Scott Turner In Motion Staff Writer The Southeastern Museum of Photography boasts a large collection of works in its permanent collection, lovingly procured and maintained over the years.
