Several clubs and organizations were on hand to promote safety issues geared towards Spring Break. The timely event was held on the main campus of Daytona State College the week prior to the mini-vacation.

The Human Services club had a good turn out of volunteers who served up delicious treats to attendees. At one table, three flavors of non-alcoholic daiquiris were available for a donation. Many took their strawberry, pina colada or lemon-lime daiquiri and headed to the other table where more club members served up aromatic cuisine featuring Jerk Chicken and Bayou Red Beans and Rice.

On the stage nearby, I-Resolution, an Orlando-based band, filled the Student Landing with reggae music. While some were content to sit and listen, enjoying their Cajun-style food, others danced and swayed to the beats. Led by vocalist, Ali Rebel, the band has a full schedule of shows. To find out where they will play, check out their website www.iresolutionvibez.com.

Walking around the quad, other groups were stressing responsible behavior during the break. Among those were Narcotics Anonymous which offers self-help style meetings for free throughout the county. They have an array of literature available to help understand addiction and its signs. For more information about addiction or upcoming meetings, go to http://daytona.org.

Stewart Marchman Act was also represented. In addition to information similar to NA, they offered their mobile bus which was in the DSC parking lot. Anyone could go to the bus for a free, 20 minute HIV test. SMA has counseling to follow up the Human Immunodeficiency Virus screening. Since safe sex was their focal point that day, they were handing out free male and female condoms, along with information. They can be reached at www.smabehavioral.org.

Phi Theta Kappa and the Gay-Straight Alliance also had sexual safety in mind. PTK, a DSC honor society discretely distributed condoms and information in plain envelopes. The Gay-Straight Alliance, a DSC club promoting understanding of gender identity and sexual orientation, had a similar agenda, openly handing out colorful condom packets and club meeting information.

Mariella Pierson, a DSC Science Club member, said, “The Science Club wants you to survive your Spring Break.” Their table raised awareness of drinking and driving along with the numerous problems and consequences associated with such behavior. Emphasis was placed on the hazards of binge drinking, a dangerous and often deadly activity commonly associated with teens and young adults.

Blood donors were invited to the Red Cross’ Big Red Bus in the parking lot. There, they would receive a free movie ticket after donating a much needed resource, blood.

Another DSC honor society, Sigma Beta Delta, had informative and timely information at their table. With Daytona Beach being a popular destination for spring breakers, information pertaining to skin cancer signs, symptoms and prevention were on display.

Online security and telemarketing scams were discussed at the Community Traffic Safety table. Senior Deputy Avis L. Burrows pointed out, “ Everything you make copies of at the store or at work, personal information or whatever, the copy machine stores the information.” New scams pop up daily, it’s important to be vigilant and not post personal information online, or leave personal data in a public copier. They also handed out free bike locks.

Financial Aid had information about scholarships. Mercedes Tala and Michelle Goldy reminded everyone to get their scholarships for the summer session completed and turned in. As always, students can get more information and help regarding financial aid and scholarships at the Financial Aid office.

The Dental Hygiene Program, located on the Deland campus, handed out free samples of dental floss and toothpaste. Brochures listed prices for cleanings, which include an exam and fluoride treatment, and x-rays. Prices for services are slightly higher for the general public, but are still a great bargain. DSC students and employees can get a dental cleaning for $10. Sealants are available for children 11 and younger.

A 10-minute massage could be bought for a mere $5 donation during the “Safe Break” expo. Students from the Massage Therapy Program were on hand to give the seated massages. A brochure about the program includes information on scheduling a full, 50-minute massage at the clinic located on the main campus. Appointments are available each semester, but fill up quickly.

Intramural Sports had an inflatable surfing area set up. Participants were encouraged to try their surfing skills on a board surrounded by lots of cushioning. Intramural Sports are available to all DSC students. You can join anytime with activities continuing through the end of the semester. A complete listing of sports and activities, along with dates and times, is available on the DSC website.

Volusia County Community Assistance Division raised awareness for the continued need of breakfast, lunch and snacks for children and teens 18-years-old and younger during the summer.
