According to Fitness Center Specialist Deborah Stelling, \u201cYoga has been present on this campus for at least 16 years. She was first exposed to it by her mother, who first picked it up during the protest movements of the 60\u2019s. It did not become a large element in her life until later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was involved in a serious car accident in 1999, and began to utilize yoga as a healing tool soon after. I found it amazing, it was one of the few things that I was able to do that helped me heal instead of being counter-productive.\u201d Appleby said.<\/p>\n<p>The classes are designed as a group activity, and have a cemented group of regulars who attend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a group of about 8-10 regulars who show up every class. It\u2019s cool how everyone has become so close.\u201d Appleby said.<br \/>\nAppleby was certified as a yoga instructor by the Southern Institute for Yoga Instruction, and all instructors for classes offered at Daytona State are required to be certified in their field. The certification covers many different aspects, in Appleby\u2019s words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe certification process is not just the forms of yoga. We also study anatomy heavily, as well as communication and philosophy. We learn how to convey instructions to cater to a variety of different learning styles, and make sure to be able to adapt our lessons to the individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yoga classes are being offered this semester on Mondays from 5:30 \u2013 6:30 PM, and continue until April 14. Classes cost $25 for six class sessions, and are open to students, faculty, and the community.
