Local students combined their efforts to help bring these families meals for the holiday season. Food drives often ask locals to bring in unopened canned goods, often with no suggestions dealing with what to bring in. DSC’s Student Government Association decided to put a twist on the classic food drive.

DSC’s SGA compiled a list of acceptable items which they called a “Basket Brigade.” Students were required to purchase a laundry basket, any size is accepted as long as it can hold several cans of food. Students were then encouraged to fill the basket with Thanksgiving themed foods such as canned beans, canned cranberries, ready-made pie crusts, turkey stuffing and coupons for turkey, ham and other meats.

“Kids are looked down on because adults feel we don’t do much for our community. Donating is great because it allows the students to feel like they’re helping the community instead of just sitting back and watching the adults do everything,” said student Zach Lukasik, who donated a basket of his own to the cause.

Students or employees of the college who wished to donate money instead of food, were encouraged to donate cash or check, made payable to Daytona State College. Donations, both money and groceries, were all given to the Co-Curricular Activities Office in the Lenholt Student Center (Bldg 140, Room 154.) Donations were accepted from Mon, Nov 11 through Fri, Nov 22 and baskets were donated around the county by students of the SGA to local families on Saturday, Nov 23.

Katy Kleinginna In Motion Staff Writer Fall brings forth pumpkins, cooler weather and a holiday dedicated to being thankful for all that you have.
