Although used for many years for many activities, the Falcon Swim Team was the most known group utilizing the building for several years starting with its formation from the swim club in 2009.

Nancy Homan, Center Coordinator for the Fitness and Aquatic Center, discussed the future of the facility, formally known as the Gale Lemerand Aquatic Center. Since its inception, it’s not only been open to Daytona State students, but also to the surrounding community. There are a myriad of programs that are offered at nominal prices and many local businesses and organizations use it on a weekly basis. These programs are still being offered and make for a full schedule at the center.

While the swim team itself is no longer utilizing the pool, many of the athletic teams do still train there. The Daytona State baseball, basketball and women’s basketball teams all utilized the facility over the course of the summer and the first few weeks of school, and many more plan to throughout the year. These are not the only teams to utilize it, since many teams from other institutions train at the pool, including the Father Lopez High School swim team and Bethune-Cookman University and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University athletic teams.

Among the local businesses and organizations using the Aquatic Center are the Volusia County Beach Patrol, American Red Cross, local Scuba certification businesses and local police. Those employees and residents all use the pool for various training programs and instruction.

The Aquatic Center provides multiple safety courses and certifications that are available to students and faculty. These include certifications for lifeguards and the Aerobic Fitness Association of America Personal Trainer and Water Aerobics Instructor programs. These may require a fee to obtain re-certification.

While the swim team itself may be no more, an option does exist for it to continue in another fashion. Homan recalled that before the swim team was official, there was a swim club on the Daytona State campus. While it would have to be a student initiative to bring it back, she is assured that the center would be able to accommodate the pool time for them, adding that, “We would like to see the swim club active again.”

With the myriad of options available to students, faculty and the community, the Aquatic Center is still an important focal point for not only the College, but for the community as well. With or without a swim team, the Gale Lemerand Aquatic Center is still bustling with activity providing many services.

For information, students can consult the staff or the pamphlets available in the Fitness Center, Building 310 on the Daytona Beach campus.

Scott Turner In Motion Staff Writer With the unfortunate news that the swim team had been disbanded, many were wondering what is to become of the Aquatic Center, namely the pool.
