{"id":1166,"date":"2013-09-28T16:12:46","date_gmt":"2013-09-28T20:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/?p=1166"},"modified":"2018-05-13T18:44:19","modified_gmt":"2018-05-13T22:44:19","slug":"common-core-training-on-tap-thanks-to-grant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.daytonastateinmotion.com\/oldsite\/common-core-training-on-tap-thanks-to-grant\/","title":{"rendered":"Common Core training on tap, thanks to grant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Daytona State College has partnered with 10 other Florida College System institutions and Florida State University to provide Common Core State Standards, or CCSS training, to public K-12 educators.<\/p>\n<p>With Indian River State College as the lead institution on the $7.2 million federal grant, the Florida Common Core State Standards Professional Development Consortium will design and deliver professional development training to support the CCSS initiative. Training will address teacher standards, assessments for math and English, student tutorials, a text-demand study and more.<\/p>\n<p>Daytona State will develop online training modules for the common core student tutorial, which is part of the CCSS teacher training toolkit. Its share of the grant proceeds will total approximately $580,000,<br \/>\nwhich also will allow it to provide CCSS training that will reach thousands of K-12 teachers in Brevard, Seminole, Orange, Volusia and Flagler counties.<\/p>\n<p>Daytona State will adopt a \u201ctrain the trainer\u201d concept that will cater to all learning types and be offered in online and face-toface environments, according to Dr. Amy Ringue, project director for the college\u2019s share of the grant and professor in Daytona State\u2019s College of Education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other news for the College of Education, the Bachelor\u2019s of Science in Education Department is now offering two additional majors in teacher education: Secondary Physics and Secondary Chemistry starting this Fall term. This is an addition to the already popular majors of elementary education, K-12 exceptional student education, secondary mathematics, secondary biology and secondary earth\/space science.<\/p>\n<p>For the spring graduating class of 2013, which was the biggest in its short history, over 95 percent of graduates who were looking for teaching positions were hired. Volusia County hired over 400 new teachers this summer and still needs more. Florida Gov. Rick Scott also gave money to all districts to increase teacher\u2019s salaries starting this fall.
