Romance May Be All on Your Head

During the season of love, it may be hard to keep the romance alive. A little cut, highlight and blow dry, however, can reignite an old flame.

With the recent arrival of 2019, there is a calling for new trends in hair fashion and exciting ways to spice up a look.

At La Bella Day Spa in Ormond Beach hair stylist Amanda DeFrance says, “You can make a bold statement with a shadow root. It is an ashy look with a hint of grey, it is very sophisticated and mature.”

She also suggests a special way to wear hair for a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner with a significant other. In her professional opinion, wearing a sleek and smooth ponytail is the best way to dress for the occasion. Although there are other ways to prepare for Valentine’s Day, to go classy is never the wrong route.

As 2018 came to a close, the shadow root, balayage and light highlights were the most popular hair styles to end the year with. All three looks are vaguely similar, but they have different lasting impressions on others. The shadow root tends to attract more of the hipster type, while on the other end of the spectrum, light highlights appeal to the frat boys, according to the experts on such matters. The balayage is a lighter, caramel highlight for darker hair and this trend is for girls with a fiery personality, therefore attracting any man bold enough to approach.

These trends are also popular at the cosmetology program at Daytona State. Not only is the salon on Daytona State College’s campus very inexpensive for students and other customers, it is also a place to go and get updated with the newest fads in fashion. J’nese Stephens is a student in the cosmetology program at DSC and has been cutting and styling hair for the last 10 years.

To her, the most popular looks for love include highlights, balayage and hair extensions. There is a recurring pattern in hair length. Meaning, when it is cool to have short hair, the girls with long hair chop the extra inches. Yet, the second their locks are gone, long hair is back in style and that calls for extensions. It is a never ending cycle of wanting what the other girls have. In this season of new beginnings, new romances, new opportunities, it is time to stand out with your hairdo.

Valentine's HairstylesStephens says that for a romantic first date, “Go hair up. I would recommend a loose updo or a braid. This shows off your face shape and beauty.”

She adds that if you have long hair it is much easier to put up in unique fashions. For shorter hair, use extensions to get the same effect.

Finding love face-to-face in the digital age of swiping left or right can be hard. Having a personalized style may be exactly what Mr. Right is looking for after many years of his Ms. Wrong.

While looking for love consider some long-held beliefs. Do blondes really have more fun? Or will a bold brunette look inspire a sense of mystery or above-average intelligence? And for women who are relentlessly daring, go red. Allow hair to be the ice breaker for introductory conversation with a potential new love.

The future of hair fads lies with every new year. Aspiring hair stylist and DSC student Giavonna Auricchio from Boca Raton, is excited to see where the next trend will come from.

She says men are more attracted to a dark head of hair because it is less popular then the trending blond. Brunette women seem more mature and future focused.

Auricchio comes from a line of hair stylist and for the last two years she has been practicing braids, styles and cuts.

“I love to braid because it is very simple and looks well put together when it is finished,” she explains.

She recommends a French braid for a Valentine’s Day dinner because it acknowledges the romance of French culture. With this in place, there is no way there could be a flaw in the date.

Although she encourages empowerment through all hair styles, Auricchio says, “Keep it simple. Don’t be too much. You can be eye-catching and still pleasant.”

This is important to keep in mind because too much hair dye, hair spray or hairs out of place might lead to paying the check.

The world is changing ever so quickly. So why shouldn’t hair? Go with what seems fit to feel beautiful during the season of love. If a hair style is no longer working, there are many ways to stay in fashion and get the “look.”

Many different looks will draw the desired attention. Just dare to change.
