Community band, orchestra and ensembles looking for players

With the cultural season opening in September, Daytona State College’s School of Music, Entertainment and Art invites local musicians to join the Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra or Jazz Ensemble. No fees are required for participation unless college credit is desired.

The DSC Community Symphonic Band, developed in the spirit of the old John Philip Sousa Bands, performs traditional and modern classics, as well as marches, Broadway hits and movie selections. The band welcomes community members who can read music and play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument to join an outstanding 65-piece concert ensemble. The 26th season of the band will commence with an open rehearsal, including new and returning members, on Monday, Aug. 27, at 7 p.m. on the Daytona Beach Campus in the Theater Center (Bldg. 220), room 219. Rehearsals are held every Monday from 7 to 9:50 p.m. Continue reading Community band, orchestra and ensembles looking for players

Deception on the rise, public trust decreases

Photo manipulation has a face as weathered as the art of photography itself, but the threat of such a practice has increased dramatically due to the digital era.

Transforming images to convey messages in a particular manner is a rising issue with society’s photojournalists as they seek ways to arouse public notice. Originally, the camera lens portrayed accuracy for the public eye, but with the aid of image editing software, a rising doubt has caused the community to question the true intentions of the media. Encouraging words to jump start new semester

On behalf of the entire Daytona State College community, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the start of another academic year. Fall is an exciting time for us who have made higher education our calling. This is especially true at Daytona State, where staff and faculty each year can bear witness to a diverse body of students whose academic needs, preparation, interests and goals are as varied as the four seasons.

At Daytona State College, quality in all we do is first and foremost, from the cleanliness of our campus environment and the results-oriented service provided by our academic advisors, to the equipment you will use in our learning labs and the expertise our faculty bring to the classroom. The best part is we are able to continue this tradition of excellence during another year of austere state appropriations for higher education without the need to increase tuition for our students. Daytona State Falcons seeks new swimmers

Last spring, Daytona State College’s men and women swim teams walked away from NJCAA Championships in South Florida with a proud second place trophy, but the time to restock the talented group is at hand.

Head Swimming and Diving Coach Don Gibb is currently faced with the task of recruiting a team worthy of a national title. In the short time following his installment at the new coach, Gibb managed a team last year that was full of turbulent history. What’s more, he led them to a successful championship finish. Last fall’s familiar sophomore faces were joined by a large, gifted freshman class. Gibb came to Daytona State with experience and the purpose of returning to the roots where he first began his collegiate career. Continue reading Daytona State Falcons seeks new swimmers
