Daytona Museum Traverses Ice Age Highway

Two museum patrons gaze at Dinosaur bones

Hundreds of footprints are left on Daytona Beach everyday, but imagine finding the trail of an ancient animal standing 10-feet tall with ivory tusks protruding eight feet from its skull.

The members of WISE, an adult continuing education program sponsored by Daytona State College, gathered at the News-Journal Center Nov. 6 to learn from Dr. James Zacharias of the Museum of Arts and Sciences about the prehistoric history of their beloved town and home state of Florida. As the curator of the museum began to illustrate the scene of prehistoric Florida to the crowd, he lifted the fossilized remains of a 120,000 year old Mastodon found just behind the Subaru Dealership on Nova Road. Cast of the television show, Community

Enter Jeff Wingham (Joel McHale), a suspended lawyer who is forced to attend Greendale Community College after being disbarred for not having a license. So begins the first episode of “Community,” originally airing Thursdays at 8 p.m.

Struggling with his classes and an insurmountable amount of personal problems, he finds himself joining a study group with other outcasts, consisting of Abed, (Danny Pudi,) a pop culture obsessed film student; Shirley (Nicole Brown), a single mother and outspoken Christian; Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase,) a millionaire geriatric afflicted with a severe case of boredom; and a slew of others, who don’t quite fit the social norm. Soon, they all find themselves at odds with the rest of the student body and notable faculty members, like Senor Cheng (Ken Jeong,) the Asian Spanish teacher, and Dean Pelton (Jim Rash), the sexually ambiguous head of the school, who desperately wants and tries to make Greendale appear more like a substantial university than it actually is. Class shows how to profit from government

Government contracts can be a lucrative business with the right know how. A recent seminar at Daytona State College focused on the benefits of selling to government agencies.

Selling goods or services to government agencies may seem overwhelming, but there are agencies that specialize with helping to navigate through all the paperwork and many offer this assistance for free. As Ned Harper ─ with the Florida Small Business Development Center ─ pointed out, “If you pay taxes. . . you’ve already paid for our services.” Continue reading Class shows how to profit from government

Slumber a stranger to struggling students

Sleep is becoming more of a stranger among struggling college students who trade in their ability to rest in order to maintain busy schedules.

Sleep is important for mental restoration, aiding in memory consolidation while allowing the body to physically recuperate from the day’s tasks. Students are prone to the risk of insomnia with their hectic schedules, varying class times and busy social lives. Continue reading Slumber a stranger to struggling students

Cultural Arts Festival

Nunamann Hall, also known as Building 200, was the setting this year for Daytona State College’s annual Cultural Arts Festival. By 11:30 a.m., there were seven stations offering a variety of foods from around the world, a live band on stage playing jazz and about 100 students gathered around to sample the diverse offerings available at this year’s festival. The bevy of foods available consisted of light samplings from India, Mexico, Puerto Rico, France, Greece, the Orient and Italy, courtesy of the Olive Garden.

In additional to a diverse array of cuisines, various musicians took to the stage, one after the other, and in between sets, traditional Chinese dances were performed. After a jazz trio, there were a pair of Hawaiian guitarists, accompanied by two pompom equipped dancers in grass skirts, and then a Caribbean quintet, that also doubled as a Latin/Salsa band. That group also brought with them a dance troupe of energetic young students, who coerced and otherwise convinced members of the crowd to join in the festivities. ‘Battle of the Sexes’ Earns Applauses

What starts as two confused babies trying to figure out what their gender is, ends with advice for successful relationships. All the emotions of being in love or out of it, burst out during the “Battle of the Sexes,” the scene showcase recently on stage at the News-Journal Center.

Executed carefully and passionately by the students in the acting classes at Daytona State College, the animated lover’s quarrel took centerstage last month in the Gillespy Theatre. It had in it the passion of the hopeful, the virtues of the good, the evil in the bad, the desperation in the sad, the bitterness in the ugly, the excitement from leg exposures and profane language, all reflecting modern life.
