Irish Heritage Day

Greeted by the beautiful sound of Irish music, dozens of Daytona State College students and others were drawn to the student Landing to listen to Larry Whitler play his accordion effortlessly.

Accompanied by his partner, Robin MacBlaine on the Mandolin, members of My Uncles Friends were just one of the many attractions at the Irish Heritage Day event on March 22.

In another area of the gathering John McLoughlin and Taylor Crider showed their love for all things Celtic by offering several Irish Heritage Day images to be printed out and placed on shirts that they could then be worn throughout the day.

Also offered at the event were Irish delicacies like fried spiral cut potatoes on a stick and a 6-foot-long sandwich.

“We ordered the 6-foot bread roll ─ we obviously don’t have a 6-foot oven ─ with corned beef that we cut here and the coleslaw was made here and topped with thousand island dressing with chips,” said a DSC cafeteria worker serving up food.

Adorning the far side of The Landing sat members of DSC Science Club Brian McGrath and Tori Caldwell, who took it upon themselves to educate their peers about William Thomason, a Scottish/Irish inventor who created the Kelvin Scale and three laws of Thermodynamics.

Though a lot of the students caught the tail end of the event, most like Kiya Thomas, a second-year Psychology major, had good things to say about the activity. “I really like the potatoes. I love the music, it’s relaxing. I’m actually glad I just got out of class because I didn’t have to wait long in the lines.”
