Daytona State dancers are preparing for their annual Spring Dance Concert in April. Auditions for the event were held at the beginning of the fall 2015 semester, in August and September. The concert will primarily consist of modern dance, which is an assorted mix of dance and music where usually the dancers are barefoot.
“We will have eight dancers and four different numbers,” said Kevin Veiga, the dance professor at Daytona State College. The concert will also showcase dancers from other schools.
“Bethune-Cookman University and Valencia College in Orlando will be bringing their dancers, and they will each be performing two numbers,” said Veiga. There will not be any faculty members, including Veiga, performing at the concert.
“The focus is on the students and all of their hard work,” said Veiga.

Ashlee Jarvis, one of the dancers from Daytona State College that will be performing at the concert, is only 19-years-old and has been dancing for about nine years. She and the other dancers have been practicing for this event since a few weeks into the spring 2016 semester.
“I will be performing one solo, one trio and a few group numbers,” said Jarvis. “Everyone has been working really hard. We practice from 3-9 p.m. every Monday and Wednesday.” This is Jarvis’ last semester at Daytona State, as she will continue on to the University of South Florida in their dance program.
The concert, “Dancescapes,” will be held on April 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the News-Journal Center in the Davidson Theater. Admission is free to all Daytona State College students with their college ID.
