The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the state of the sports world and cancelled all sports at Daytona State College. There have not been many changes yet as the country plans to reopen on May 1. DSC student athletes have been transitioning to training at home while completing classes online.

“Life off campus is great being back with family, has given me time to think and get ready for the next step in my basketball career,” said Kam’Ron Cunningham on DSC’s Men’s Basketball team. “I’ve been working out to stay in shape. Doing simple things like going to gyms and running!”
“I’ve always enjoyed online school, so I’ve been doing great. To me I thought it was a little bit easier and helpful. As far as how they’ve been handling it, they have been doing great too! The athletic department updates us on what needs to be done and check in every now and again to make sure we stay on top, which has been helpful.” Cunningham said.

Some student athletes live out of state such as McKenna Gottschalk of Colorado and Michelle O’ Driscoll from Ireland. Both play on the Daytona State Women’s Soccer team.
“We can’t get wait back to playing soccer!” said Gottschalk. “It’s definitely hard going from training every day to not having it now. However, we are staying in shape by doing workouts put together by our coaches and by getting out to the field to kick around.”
“And as far as quarantine goes, we’ve adapted pretty well. It was definitely challenging at first, but we’ve worked out a good schedule to get things done during the day by sticking to a routine throughout the week. We’re staying at my home in Colorado, so it’s been a big change of environment, but we are making the best of it! We do weekly zoom calls with our coaches and teammates from DSC so it’s always something to look forward to and to check in with how everyone’s doing.”
Student athletes are staying game ready for when they are told they can come together again as teams which they hope will be in the Fall 2020 semester.
