The second Daytona State College Board of Trustees meeting for spring semester covered the impending opening of the Lemerand Student Center, which will be Building 115. Originally scheduled to open in January, DSC President Dr. Tom Labasso said that the student center will definitely be 100 percent open after spring break in mid-March.
There is a gala Food & Wine Festival scheduled there Sunday, March 31, from 4 to 7 p.m.. The tapas-style buffet will feature delicacies from the area’s finest restaurants, with proceeds to benefit the DSC Homeless Initiative. The board was excited about the first-time event, noting that there already have been nine confirmed restaurants that will be represented. Feeding children and the homeless is Board Chair Forough Hosseini’s favored cause.
“One day,” she said, “we might be the first county to be child and homeless hunger-free.”
In other business, the board discussed a recent high-school soccer play-off for a few local boy and girl teams at the campus stadium. Daytona State hosted the event and board members expressed that it was happy for the opportunity to give those teams a professional place to play.
The most recent job fair on the Deland Campus was pronounced a huge success, with numbers increasing this year compared to last year. There were 157 employers represented in February — which is maximum capacity — compared to last year’s 147. Attendees also increased to 862 and 684 attended last year. Surveys given out to the employers indicated they think DSC is a great partner to work with.
The Lenholt Student Center, building 130, is scheduled to be remodeled by December of this year and will be the new home for the Center for Men and Women, joining the Veteran’s Center as occupants. Finally, the Faculty Senate named Professor Michael McKeown, a professor of human behavior and history and volunteer war reenactor at the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, its Faculty of the Month winner.
The next Board of Trustees meeting will be April 18, due to the Spring Break schedule. The Board will have its annual retreat on April 25. For agendas, past meeting notes and other information, go to https://www.daytonastate.edu/board_trustees/meetings.html
