DSC Fitness Center bargain with a big pay off

Like most college students, those at Daytona State find it immensely hard to fit anything other than their classes and the requirements of their job into their weekly schedules.

Many students have the consistent need to exercise their bodies but simply cannot find the time. After a long day at school, striving towards a future they can only dream of, all a student can think of is finishing daily assignments and their date with their cozy bed.

Fridays are the best days to work out, since there's almost no one there.
Fridays are the best days to work out, since there’s almost no one there.

After a long day, who wants to drive to another location yet again just to become even more exhausted than they already are and then driving all the way back home to finish whatever assignment they had to put off to start their workout?

But there’s an easy fix. Nestled in the 310 building adjacent to the photography hall sits Daytona States’ L. Gale Lemerand Fitness Center. With 3.2 tons of free weights and a 19-piece resistance training circuit there is something for everyone to enjoy not to mention the 31-piece aerobic area.

If they hire a personal trainer at the center, those looking for a little one-on-one training can see areas to better improve in from someone else’s point of view. Students are not the only ones who benefit from the Lemerand Center services. Staff, faculty and administrators all take advantage of the facilities too.

“It opens early at a modest time and it’s good to have the opportunity. I’m a teacher and with your students you want to practice what you preach. It gives me credibility when they see me in here every day improving myself.  I do what I can to make a difference in their life,” says Nicholas Bellino, Associate Professor in the Mori Hosseini College of Hospitality and Culinary Management program.

The Fitness Center offers two types of personal training sessions for members only. A one-on-one session lasts an hour and costs $25. Then there’s the small group training in which the cost may vary.  Those who might be thinking “How much is this going to run me?” will discover that most fitness centers and gyms cost up to a hundred dollars a year, but for a full four months and proof of a Daytona State student ID upon the purchase, will run $45.

Included with the membership are free classes including yoga, Cardio Fusion, Pilates, and Zumba.

“Classes are free for students and faculty of the school who are members of the gym,” says Sarah Mostolinia, who works in the center. “If you are not a member it is $25 for each class. Our busiest days are around lunch time every day and we are closed on weekends.”

Still unsure about whether or not to join up and lay down $45 for four months (or $100 for the full year)? Then stop by the Fitness Center and pick up a free exercise pass that allows students to use its facilities for free.

Recognizing family and student concerns for safety, the staff at the Lemerand Center is certified in CPR, AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) and first aid.
