The Studio Rats, Daytona State College’s art club, held its art show the first week of November for the public to enjoy. Each year, the club puts its work on view at the end of the fall and spring terms and works contniue on display through the end of each semester.
The theme this semester was “Lucid Dreaming” and it was carried out through the decorations and various types of artwork. Studio Rats was just started two years ago, but every semester they have held a show.
“We begin talking about the art show about two or three weeks into the semester,” said Ryan Holland, secretary of the club. “Then we all make a list of themes and decide from there.”
Last spring the theme was “fantasy works based on books and movies,” said Hanh Nguyen, a member of Studio Rats from the start.
Walking through the hall of studio arts, in building 520, observers will see a set-up of a bedroom with lights everywhere and a tree at the entrance of the hallway that lead to the display room. Inside the room are pictures along the wall of various pieces of artwork and in the center are multiple displays of pottery.
All members of the club, as well as non-members, were encouraged to submit pieces of art that reflected what lucid dreaming meant to them and it could be any type of art. Hannah Cruz, a comic artist, painted multiple panels of canvas and placed them around each other to create a storyboard. Bernard Postell used his digital images using “a touchpad tablet and Photoshop Elements, which is a photo editing program.”
There were no boundaries to what the students could use and some pieces were even up for sale by the artist.
In addition to unique artworks, the opening offered refreshments provided by the art preofessors and some of the students.
“If you are in the club you had to help out with the decorations and setting up for the show,” said Alex Schouten, club President. “It took about four weeks altogether to get everything ready.”
Anyone interested in joining Studio Rats can attend its meetings, which are every Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in building 520, room 111a.
