Campus food options limited but available

The Bean, a cafe located in the Karl Learning Resources Center, Building 210, on the Daytona Beach Campus is now closing at 4 instead of 7 p.m. Students aren’t happy about that since the Library is open until 8 p.m. and other food options are not convenient.

The food-service Starbucks — meaning it pours the Seattle-based coffee brand but serves Sodexo food items — wasn’t getting enough business during later hours.

“The Bean is a great place to get something quick to eat or grab some coffee and it’s too bad they close sooner now. Santamaria and the other employees there are always very friendly and do a really good job,” said Jonaire Francis, a student at DSC working on his AA degree.

Even after the change, The Bean is still the cafe open the latest on campus throughout the week.

“Nursing students are the ones that normally come in later and have been asking for us to actually stay open longer, so it’s unfortunate for them and a lot of students that take night classes since we won’t be open until seven anymore,” said Sondra Castle, a Bean employee.

Despite DSC offering night classes, the only place on campus to get something to eat on weekdays after 4 p.m. is a vending machine. But there is hope hungry students!

The Halifax Health-Medical Center of Daytona Beach offers a cafeteria with a wide selection of food and is next door, at 303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd. It is open Monday through Friday and serves breakfast from 6 to 9:30 a.m., lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and dinner from 4:30 to 6 p.m., but has limited service between meal times.

Another option available to students is the France Tower Coffee Shop, also located in the Halifax-Health Medical Center. It’s another nearby place to get a cup of morning coffee or an afternoon pick-me-up and is open until 10 p.m. The coffee shop offers a full espresso bar, pastries and made to order food.

Finally, housed in the Hosseini Center, building 1200, is Cafe 101. It’s a more formal dining experience and not ideal for on-the-go, but it is close, convenient and gets rave reviews. Cafe 101 has been highly rated by the Daytona Beach News-Journal and is open for lunch Monday through Friday with seating times of 11:30 a.m. or noon, but only serves dinner on Wednesday evenings, with seating times of 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 p.m.

Cafe 101 features a fixed-price menu of $11 for lunch and $15 for dinner, which includes tax. Patrons receive an appetizer, entree, dessert and beverage. Vegetarian meals are available by request and all gratuities help fund student scholarships. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 386-506-3859.
