Understanding and acceptance of diversity through waffles
Daytona State College’s Student Government Association is hosting an event called “Diversity with Waffles.”
Waffles will be served with an assortment of toppings available to create your own delicacy. This free event will celebrate and educate diversity among students, faculty, staff and members of the community.
“Diversity with Waffles” will take place Thursday, Nov. 20 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Student Landing.
Several DSC clubs will be represented to promote acceptance of that which makes us different and unique from others. Some of the clubs participating are, Global Friends, the Gay-Straight Alliance, and SGA.
Groups will set up stations with activities promoting and educating diversity.
There will also be chances to win prizes.
SGA will have information about their club and their Guatemala Project, as well as ways to get involved. Students from Global Friends and the Gay-Straight Alliance will be on hand to discuss club meeting times, activities and other information.
For further information about these and other clubs and activities, visit the Student Life section of the DSC website.
From trash to treasure, Guatemala Project builds schools
SGA members will be selling bracelets to earn money for the Guatemala Project throughout the month.
The Guatemala Project raises funds to help build bottle schools for children in Guatemala.
Children and community members of the community collect plastic bottles and inorganic trash to make “eco-bricks.” The plastic bottles are stuffed with paper, plastic bags, polystyrene and other trash until they are packed solid.
The framework for the schools are made using reinforced concrete flooring with post and beam framing. Chicken wire is used to enclose the structure partially.
The “eco-bricks” are then fastened to the chicken wire to form almost solid walls. These are then covered with cement coating to provide the building with sturdy walls. A standard roof is then added.

Food contributions help families have thankful holiday
Once again, Daytona State College is collecting food to help those who are less fortunate. The Basket Brigade will collect non-perishable foods through Nov. 21. Students, faculty and staff are asked to put donations into boxes which are located throughout campus. Baskets will be put together and delivered to local families in need this holiday season. Any food not used in the baskets will be donated to the Volusia County food drive.
Volunteers get hairy during November for Guatemala Project
Throughout the month of November, volunteers have been asked to abstain from shaving as a means to raise money through sponsorships. The money raised will benefit the Guatemala Project which helps build schools for children in Guatemala. Each volunteer recruited sponsors and business partners to match funds.
Those involved shaved Oct. 31, in order to start the month fresh. While most were guys who now are sporting beards of various lengths, a few women joined in by also not shaving during this time. They will go the entire month without shaving. The culmination of the event will be a group shaving at the Student Landing on Dec. 2. Students from the cosmetology and barber programs will shave the volunteers.
