This year for the first time, Florida college’s student-run newspapers were judged in a single division. In Motion had tough competition, including Miami Dade College which is the largest state university in the world. Despite going from two divisions to one, Daytona State College’s In Motion took Second Place in Newspaper General Excellence Awards. Such recognition is a testament to the excellent education and support system found at DSC.
Individual awards in the newspaper competition include 1st Place in the category, General Column, which was awarded to Brandon Krampert. Judge’s comments regarding Krampert’s articles include, “Nicely written and researched columns, all dealing with serious, substantial topics. The writer did the research and the knowledge of the material comes through in the writing.” Krampert took home a plaque and a certificate for his well-written opinion pieces.
Brianna Mims, the 2013-2014 Design Editor, received two 1st Place awards. The first in the Editorial Cartoon category and the second for Comic Strip, receiving a plaque and certificate for each. The judge’s comments on the Editorial Cartoon were.
“This is a timely commentary on the legalization of pot….Bold strokes and color give this piece a unique look and feel. Smart cartoon, well drawn.” Her cartoon, published February 2014, is available in the archives online. Regarding the Comic Strip, the judge commented, “Mims knows how to take a timely topic (Facebook + Social Media) and spin it ion a fun and clever way. Most illustrators cannot pull off her drawing style, so it’s nice to see pen and ink still alive and, in Mim’s case, doing very well.” Her cartoon series, Sara and Tara can also be seen online.
In Motion took home several 2nd Place Awards, including: News Photo – Joyce Wagner; Picture Story – Amber Boutot, Elizabeth Kirkland and Ali Schmitz; Sports Writing – Scott Turner; and Editorial – Brandon Krampert. Scott Turner also received an Honorable Mention for In-Depth Reporting.
For the magazine competition, Brianna Mims was awarded another 1st Place plaque and certificate in the Cover category for Aeolus.
The judge’s glowing comments were, “Cover is inviting and includes year, title and name of college, which is all important for record-keeping information. Cover concept is carried through to inside, adding to consistent feel for the magazine.” In all, Mim’s took home three 1st Place awards.
Also for work published in Aeolus, Brandon Hill took 2nd Place for Fiction. Three 3rd Place awards went to: Joshua Payne – Nonfiction; Elizabeth Kirkland – Photography; and Lance Rothwell – Photography.
